I tried searching, but came up pretty empty-handed. I need to get a pair of boots while in Val in February, but was looking for some recommendations. My feet are pretty wide, so places usually try to sell me larger sizes instead of doing things right. I have heard good things about Precision Ski, but wanted to know if anyone here has used them (how are they?) or would recommend someone else. Also, is there anyone in particular at Precision that I should try to get an appointment with?

Not very helpful maybe, but I do know I went in with a friend to Precision Ski in Val d with size 12 feet on the day before we were due home. They refused to sell him boots because they would not be able to make sure they were right before we left. By the way, it was the friend with size 12 feet. Not been up long!
They have a very good reputation......

Smokin Joe, I saw the clinic, but I live in Michigan in the US, so it is a bit far to travel for a pair of boots.
Chris Bish, That sounds like a good sign, most places here would be happy to sell you anything they had without even trying it on.

jml, I bought my boots from Precision Ski four years ago on recommendation. They were excellent, took about 2 hours to make custom footbeds and fit them, and then adjusted them for me when I'd skiied for a day and found some hurty bits.
They close for a long lunch though, so don't do what I did and lose out on an afternoon's skiing.

jml, They stay open in the evening, so it might be best to go in then. Get booted and ski on them next day. try not to waste daylight time in Val!

I have known some of the lads in Precision boot lab for the last couple of seasons. They are the best at what they do. Partly because some of them are also some of the best skiers in resort, total nutters, very professional though.
Dawes and Marc have been there for a while. The reason they close for lunch is cos they are off hiking the bits of the resort that nobody else is going near.

A moment with Google found http://www.valdinet.com/more_listings.php?id_service=3057 giving phone number and a mail enquiry form. Nearer your visit to Val it may be worth emailing or phoning and asking them about good times to visit and whether you need to book.
I bought boots from Precision several years ago, they needed some tweaking a few days after purchase. As expected, that was done for free. The next season they needed a bit more tweaking and that was also done for free and I think I had lost the purchase receipt by then, but they did not even ask for a receipt, they just did the work. A good shop.

mista and Adrian, Thanks a lot, it sounds like this is certianly the place to go in Val. I was more worried about showing up and having some kid that had no clue what he was doing try and fit me for boots, since they were crowded. But, it sounds like everyone is pretty decent there. Any idea about how crowded Saturday morning will be for getting boots fitted? (I am taking the Snowtrain from Paris for the first time, only done the late Saturday transfer in the past.)
Thanks again for all of your advice.

jml,
I and a friend have got boots from Precision, he has bought 3 pairs from them, we are both happy with the service we got.
Defo book, they then know you are coming, and you don't need to worry about crowds, they do get very busy.
Regards,
Greg

jml, I believe that Saturday morning should not be too much of a problem, Saturday afternoon and evening would be a nightmare though. It would be worth booking to make sure.
I had my boots fitted at Precision three years ago, very highly recommended indeed, although not cheap.

Thanks a lot everyone, looking forward to having my own pair (finally). Last year renting was the last straw, spent half of the time tightening them to try to get them to fit. Kramer, any ballpark idea on how much a pair of boots is going to run me (I ski mostly reds, planning on doing an off piste class in Val this year)? Never bought boots before, so I am not really sure what to expect (one advantage of being an American is that I should be able to get the VAT/TVA back, which basically saves me 20%).

jml, boots should cost 300-400 euros, but you do not get all the VAT back. Most shops give you forms for a company called Global Refund (www.globalrefund.com) that gives you cash at the airport before boarding. Very convenient, but you get back only about 15%. Remeber that you have to stamp your form at the customs, before checking in (they might want to see the goods).

jml, I don't have size 12 feet (sad I know) but do have boots fitted by Precision 3 seasons ago. The fitting process lasted abot 2 hours and I haven't had a moment's trouble since. Interestingly you won't select your brand of boot at precision. They measure you up and then tell you what boot you will be buying!

nigels, Yes, go into the shop completely open-minded and take what they suggest, you won't regret it. I got boots at Precision Ski three years' ago, did have to take them back twice during the first couple of days for fine tuning, but since then have had no problems. Previously my boots had always given me problems.

I bought my boots from Precision Ski 3 years ago. It took about 2 hours on a Saturday morning - I didn't book and got served straight away, but it was early December.
I had to go back and get quite a few adjustment made (strange shaped feet), but all this was done for free. Well worth the time and money. Service is excellent.
