Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Austrian resorts like French during school breaks?

Are Austrian resorts as crazy as their French counterparts? Any specific weeks to avoid?

telski, Welcome to snowHead if you haven't been already! I haven't been to Austria during UK half terms (usually middle week of Feb) but have during Fasching week - I think this is part of the Easter/Lent preparations and it can be pretty wild in lift queues, nursery and lower slopes. Thousands (it seemed) of kids and older in fancy dress, face paint etc. May be worth checking the websites for whichever resort (s) you are thinking of and seeing if they have anything special lined up for Fasching. The upside is there is a great atmosphere in the bars and restaurants for apres and much hilarity ensues wink

I have been to the ski welt area in early March. Covers the resorts of Soll Scheffau, Ellmau etc. We tried to avoid the English haft term and went a week later - unfortunately that turned out to be Austrian and German half term. It was VERY busy. The lift queues were long, large ski school classes for the children and all of the mountain resturants very busy at lunch times. I wouldn't go that time again. We have been in mid January ever since and it is much quieter, hardly any queues and uncrowded pistes - much more civilised !

May be it is just an illusion. I think a crowdy skiing resort must have French children. Would the French bothers travelling to Austria to ski?

If Austria is crowdy it till isn't in the same league as France, based on the Christmas/New year experience in Zell am See/Kapun/Saalbach/Bad Gastein/Ski Welt/Kitzbuhuel and Feb mid term break in St Anton.

During the UK half term weeks, then many Austrian resorts will have numerous coachloads of British kids there.

The official school breaks vary by regions in Austria. Usually it is a week. This season it is Feb 12- Feb 17 in Voralberg, Tirol, Salzburg and Kärnten. Note, that the all the kids in Vienna have their holiday Feb 05-Feb 10 and they travel to all the resorts in the country.

Hi telski,

Avoid New Year week (30th Dec To 6th Jan) which is a bigger holiday then Christmas week and all of Feb. Jan is usually quiet but the snow is genarally good.

Are you thinking of a holiday in Austria??
