Lack of snow has forced FIS officials to cancel the women’s World Cup races scheduled for the 9th and 10th of December in St Moritz in Switzerland. Tomorrow, they will decide the fate of the men’s downhill and super G due to take place on the same weekend in Val d’Isere, France. It is possible that all the races will be rescheduled to take place in the US.
Weather also affected two FIS events last weekend. Winds of up to 90kph forced organisers to cancel the second of two World Cup snowboarding halfpipe contests at Saas-Fee in Switzerland. The first event had gone ahead on the 23rd November, with US snowboarders Scotty Lago of Seabrook and Gretchen Bleiler of Aspen winning the men’s and women’s events, respectively. ...High winds also stopped the second World Cup ski jumping event in Kuusamo, Finland last Saturday. Finland's Arru Lappi had won the first ski jumping event of the season the day before in controversial circumstances, as weather wrecked havoc with the competition. Both the qualification round and the final round were cancelled due to the conditions, so the 67 competitors had only one chance to jump. Lappi’s jump was 141m and gained him 154.8 points. However, the 15 top ski jumpers from last season were last to jump, and had appalling conditions as the weather worsened, which put them at a huge disadvantage. Then, on Sunday, rain forced officials to cancel a Nordic combined sprint World Cup race scheduled for the morning. But, by the afternoon the weather had cleared and Norway’s Eldar Roenning (38:35.2) and Finland’s Virpi Kuitunen (28:01.2) won the men’s 15K and women’s 10K classic technique World Cup cross country races, respectively.
Weather didn’t stop events at Lake Louise in Alberta, Canada at the weekend, where John Kucera had his first World Cup win - and on ‘home snow’. He won the men’s super G with a speed of 1:29.70. Defending super G world champion, Bode Miller came 14th, with the fastest race in the US team.
In Colorado (USA) on Saturday, there was another career first, this time for Austrian Kathrin Zettel, who won the women’s giant slalom in 2:16.10. On Sunday, Austrian Marlies Schild, who had been disqualified in the first run of the giant slalom on Saturday, came first in the women’s slalom with a time of 1:43.18.
