Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Bergamo to Passo Tonale

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi Folks.

I have organised a budget conscious mixed ability trip for February 25 HT to Passo Tonale and looking for advice on transfers to and from Bergamo. All advice welcome, as we usually holiday in Austria, relying on a combination of the train from Innsbruck or Munich to Zillertal or private transfers depending upon flight details.

Our flight times aren't brilliant (late) so think that public transport is unlikely to work for us. My current thinking is that car hire would open up a day out or two, to say Val di Sole, Folgarida or Madonna di Campiglio, unless the drive to from the airport to Tonale and beyond is tortuous and anyone can recommend a decent transfer company?

Thanks in advance. Rico

If you do rent a vehicle and conditions are good, head to Pejo 3000 (approx 45 min drive)

A really fun mountain

The drive is fairly striaghtforward - just valley roads until the last hairpins up to the top of the pass. Car hire is usually very inexpensive in Italy, though check desk opening times since you're going to be picking the car up late in the day. Cars should always come with snow chains in the boot (but check on collection!), though usually not with winter tyres.

Your suggested outing to Val di Sole makes sense - drive down the pass to the Daolasa gondola and you can access all the skiing in Val di Sole / Madonna from there. You could also consider Pejo, which is a similar length drive, or even Aprica (in the other direction).

All the above ski areas except Aprica are covered by the regional Skirama lift pass. However, it is expensive and it may well be cheaper to purchase separate lift passes for the different areas. If you do this, I think some of the local ski passes (including Passo Tonale's one) are cheaper when bought in advance online, rather than just rocking up to the desk when you arrive in resort.

Thanks both,

I did think that car hire was the way to go practically and opening up the area was a bonus, so thanks for the recommendations. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't dropping myself in it as 'tour leader' Very Happy

@Uncle Rico,
We used FlySki Shuttle last year who were great.

46 Euro pp one way, however last transfer is 16-30 from Bergamo and 12-45 coming back from Passo Tonale and they only do weekends. Also we were the only 2 passengers so it ended up being a private transfer which is priced at 395 Euro one way for up to 6 passengers. Obviously if you choose the private transfer option then you can specify the pick up time.

You'll need to Register first of course.

Probably should add that our driver did say the transfer times on Sunday afternoons can double if it's an Italian holiday as it's basically one road up and back all the way from Milan.

Jammy 07, Thanks for the additional information I think that we are timed out flight wise for a FlySki Shuttle, so I guess we are looking at private transfer v car hire.

In Italy, be sure to request snow chains when renting a car. If you prefer winter tires, you must specifically ask for them, as most rental cars are not equipped with winter tires by default.

Thanks lars I'm about to decided to go down the car hire route and will be booking something this evening following quiz night on BBC 2.

I'll be taking your winter tyre tip on board as the thought of snow chains, even having tuned into a couple of You Tube instruction videos left me cold.

I've done this journey a few times recently, using OK Mobility car rental, minibus collects outside airport arrivals and is a continuous shuttle. Price has always been fine. Drive to Passo Tonale is easy enough. Will be using the same rental company again next February but driving to Madonna this time so different route. Having the car is convenient as the ski bus timetable to other ski areas didn't always suit.
