Poster: A snowHead
|
Knee issues are forcing a change in plans. We've been planning to go to Aosta to ski Pila and some of the other areas but now looks like we should focus on cross country and snow shoeing/walking. I've been researching and Cogne looks beautiful for cross country.
We're going second/third week of February and will not have a car. We have 6 or 7 nights. If we end up spending most days in Cogne should we stay in Aosta and take the bus each day or maybe split the time and stay in Cogne? If we're not skiing, it will be nice to have more options for museums, day trips and restaurants in Aosta. We're flying out of Geneva so perhaps it's easier to get the bus from Aosta. Any ideas are welcome. We're overlapping half term so I need to get on our lodging. Thanks for your help.

@DPL, half and half, with first and last nights in Aosta for easyle of getting the bus to Geneva. The bus up to Cogne is fun but a bit long to do every day, and Cogne is very beautiful, well worth staying up there. We stayed at the Miramonti, lovely and comfortable. You can rent xc kit and get lessons if you need them easily.
Aosta itself is also gorgeous and interesting, plenty to see. Sounds like a bloody good holiday even without skiing!

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I wouldn't be too fussed about the bus everyday from Aosta to Cogne. From memory it's a reasonable drive.
For snowshoeing there are options and trails in Pila, starting under the Gondola and in theory it should be possible to catch the Gondola down again. You can potentially also walk out the east side of Pila up past the little chapel and up towards Lago Chamole. I'm doubtful you would make to to the lift on snow shoes so a walk back out is likely.

@DPL, thanks!
You've just sent me down a snowshoe rabbit hole, apparently there's a trail called The Enchanted Forest in Cogne - if you do it, do report back, sounds magical!

No probs - when I said Gondola I actually meant Cable Car. If you struggle to find any info I can always jot a rough notation on a map for you.

@AndAnotherThing.., is that the amazingly short cable car in the middle of the resort - not the gondola up from Aosta?

There are also cross country tracks in Val Ferret and on the way to Crevacol if you want a change of scene from Cogne. All easy drives.
