Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Tips for cheap group trip

 Poster: A snowHead

Looking for very wide recommendations for a group of multiple families (5 families of 4 but possibly expanding)
- Chalet hotel / apartment complex so we can be in separate self catering accomodation but nearby
- easy-ish transfers (sub 2hrs or drive ideal)
- near to lifts
- february half term (are we too late?!)
- Spain/Andora/Austria/anywhere!

Thanks!

The following option comes to mind. Drive from the UK to a French resort, compromise on how top end the resort is, stay in small budget self catered apartments getting as close to the lifts as budget allows. Realistically it will be very busy but getting into driving range will keep the cost down. I would target larger towns such as Briancon because they will have large amounts of affordable accommodation. For example https://www.uk.travelski.com has 4 person studios in Serve Chevalier Briancon that appear to be close ish to the lifts for under £450 pp including lift pass.

Other options include:
Sierra Nevada in Spain, flying to Malaga and getting a taxi to Sierra Nevada (or possibly doing something with hire cars)
Getting the train to save on the cost of flights (the usual ski flights appear very expensive this year). A group of 20 would be large enough to access the early sales of the TGV tickets before they go on general release. There is also the option of using interrail tickets if the majority of the kids are 11 and under, reason being 11 and unders get a free interrail pass.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

France only, but you can contact Pierre et Vacances to see which of their centres (multiple resorts) still have sufficient availability.

They run large blocks of self catered apartments, usually with onsite reception.

I would never recommend traveling from UK to Sierra Nevada for a dedicated ski holiday for a week.

Pierre et Vacances operate in Andorra also. Soldeu a nice central location with shops, bars and accommodation, lots on Booking.com. (I go to El Tarter as it is quieter). Some don’t like the transfers, you decide.

Brilliant tips, thanks so much.
Am researching now. Anyone know anything about Baqueira?

Only that it’s more interesting to stay “down in the town “ than by the lifts.

But do put the name into search, limit to Resort Reviews and thread titles only, to find others.

@TurneySkiers, first of all organising a trip for 5 families is tricky in itself. Doing so in early Nov for Feb HT especially so. There is no such thing as "too late" but yes it will be difficult.

Couple of absolute musts: #1 Keep it simple #2 Don't allow yourself to become a tour operator and #3 don't be too fussy.

The beauty of France is the much greater potential for lots of s/c apartments, ski in ski out and being close to the lifts. It's possible to do this elsewhere but not as plentiful/easy. The downside is school holidays in France are notoriously busy. Arguably over notorious perhaps. I did it once and got away with it.

It sounds like you intend to DIY this trip and that you will be flying. Also I assume there will be ski school needs. I would imagine flights would be very difficult to arrange at a price that is acceptable. But a few searches would confirm. Ski schools equally would probably full or nearly so.

SnowTrex and Sunweb would be good to do some searches to see what is available and at what cost.

Italy is often recommended as an alternative to France at HT.

And I will ask the standard question - have you considered going at "Easter"?

To find flights at 'cheap group trip' prices, maybe! Shocked

We looked at this on another thread and there weren't many affordable options...Barcelona for Andorra, Marseille for French Southern Alps, Bologna for Dolomites were the only sub-£200 options from London on 15-22 Feb to somewhere vaguely skiable...and they may have gone up now! Confused

Maybe you can fly from a regional airport with cheaper options or depart/arrive on Friday or Sunday, though this could well complicate finding accommodations.

I reckon you need to see where you can fly for reasonable money and go from there snowHead

Or consider the non-flight options suggested above...or go at Easter which will probably be a lot less busy and cheaper! wink

Does this mean you want to fly somewhere first? Or is driving all the way from home and back an option?
