Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Snow History Websites / Apps

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi all.

Haven’t skied in a couple of years and trying to book a trip somewhere in France for early March 25.

Are there any good websites / apps where you can check historical snow depths for resorts by season?

I remember seeing some pretty good data when I looked a few years back (historical depths at bottom, mid, top of mountain, by month, for each previous season), however after scouring the internet I cannot find anything other than a few sites with pretty high level / generic information. Have the sites with more detailed snow history disappeared?

Thanks in advance!

Yeah have checked that, it shows amalgamated data from 2007-2024. Don’t know if I’m being thick but I can’t see anywhere to look at recent seasons only (last 5 years?)

As above but "early March" wouldn't be far off max depth (on average) everywhere in europe I'd guess.

5 years is much to short in statistical terms to tell anything, as my old geography teacher would say a place only has a climate after 30 years

Why 5 years?

a rather crude method I have used is to look at the relevant resort webcams and then, where possible, change the date on the webcam setting so that you can see the situation on the previous years for any specific date. They dont go back that far, but some will go back quite a few years and so it is of some use. and you get excited looking at the pictures. Obviously its not scientific or even medium term in most case.

@Albion43,
Try asking on the relevant (to you) resort threads in the Snow Reports forum.
Be aware of the French half term if looking at early March - think ends 10/3/25.

Tend to agree with this. I'm not sure exactly what you hope to find? Unless you are considering a particularly low or "un-snowsure" resort i wouldn't worry about there not being enough snow at that time. Trying to predict chance of powder is quite pointless as way too unpredictable. I'd probably be more interested in temperature than snow depth, but again you are just looking at a trend rather than an accurate prediction.

Excepting the last couple of years (maybe this is the trend the OP is looking for) then you'd normally find skiable snow from around 1000 meters in early March. All the low lying satellites of la Plagne and les Arcs with their extensive snowmaking are skiable down to 1200 meters to the end of March.

Copernicus will give the OP the snow cover on any particular date:

e.g 5 March 2023

https://browser.dataspace.copernicus.eu/?zoom=16&lat=45.8298&lng=6.61795&themeId=DEFAULT-THEME&visualizationUrl=U2FsdGVkX19cN4Rgl2jo%2BhhPpb6UZueQEOGPeViUdBcbHVyJYi%2Bg0KUR1JaTezfQk0uo5PE74X7KnwyAlpeiOQXfW6P%2BTxi8HWaDIk%2FFTIobQoCGH40H%2FGER5tbTwL6T&datasetId=S2_L2A_CDAS&fromTime=2022-09-05T00%3A00%3A00.000Z&toTime=2023-03-05T23%3A59%3A59.999Z&layerId=1_TRUE_COLOR&demSource3D=%22MAPZEN%22&cloudCoverage=30&dateMode=MOSAIC

You can see the poor snow cover in the Jura last spring but the main pistes in Lelex still have snow (manmade)

Ski Club Of GB used to have very comprehensive data, but a few years ago they did a website re-design and binned it all because they thought not enough people looked at it.

Not sure any statistical data will any of use, the climate change makes everything unpredictable.

That’s fortuitous for me.

I printed a load of it when I was last a member (for a Freshtracks holiday) for resorts I love and for famously snowy winters such as 1999.
