Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Skiing near Vienna

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I have a work trip coming up to Vienna in late Jan. Thinking of landing a few days ahead and getting some turns in. The only resort that I know of (thats within a reasonable train trip) is Semmering. Has anyone gone there (or somewhere else) using Vienna as the landing point?

Open to any suggestions Happy

The page Boofont has linked to is a decent resource. Semmering is about the only resort you can reach in a reasonable amount of time from Vienna by train. It's a decent day out. Also from the page above, I'd say Hochkar is worthwhile, but I don't think there's a train direct.

Schladming, can be reached directly by train from Vienna, but it's a bit of a journey (4 hours).

You could try a regional bus to Mariazell (3 hours). Small resort, not very snow sure, but should be fine in late January. Pretty town and the gondola starts directly in the town centre.

Otherwise, you'll probably need to rent a car.

Edit: There's a number of "Semmering"s. The one you want it Stuhleck: https://www.bergfex.com/semmering-stuhleck/

There are ~90 ski resorts within ~3hrs of Vienna.

Try Semmering for proximity.

Or Dachstein West for variety.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Thanks all for the responses - very much appreciated! As I will be travelling by train and no hire car, looks like it will be Stuhleck.

Has anyone stayed there? It looks pretty sparse on the ammenities front: just 1 or 2 supermarkets, and the same number of restaurants. That said - I am there for the skiing for just 2 days.

Last question, the dates that I will be there are 18 - 20th Jan...I am praying that doesn't clash with any school holidays. From what I read Stuhleck can get VERY crowded on the average weekend as it is

Here's your Austrian school holiday calendar: https://www.holidays-info.com/austria/school-holidays/2025/

There are none mid-January.
