Poster: A snowHead

Hi, we are booked to ski 4 days in Saalbach Hinterglemm in about the 3rd week of December. With sunny days there at the moment, I'm wondering if it's worth going at that time of year? Unfortunately we can't fit skiing in any later. Would you suggest staying with our decision or looking for alternate ideas like maybe 4 days in Salzburg itself and not ski? Thanks

@Delfie, have faith. It is still October. The snow will come, or if not the weather will turn colder and the ski area with some of the best snowmaking facilities in the world will use it to ensure that everything possible is open for you. Every year this forum has similar posts from people worried that it won't snow, and every year they find that ski resorts deliver the goods, and of course if they did not they would have failed and closed many years ago.
If you are incredibly unlucky and it is unseasonably warm and snowmaking is not possible, the glacier at Kaprun is not far away, but in all honesty if it is that bad (and such conditions would make it by far the worst start to the season ever) you should probably do some swimming, visit Salzburg, etc instead as half of the skiing visitors to the whole of Salzburgerland will be heading to the same place, and it will be suffering from the same weather patterns.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@ ousekjarr thanks for your reply but we are coming from Australia and we haven’t had a great season here and I realise with such a big trip for us and skiing early in December, I just thought I would ask the question.

@Delfie, understandable - for a sanity check, try this...
1. Go to https://saalbach.panomax.com/wildenkarkogel to see the current panorama picture from the top of Schonleitenbahn at the point where you cross from Saalbach over to Leogang. The view down the valley shows most Saalbach and Hinterglemm.
2. At the bottom of the screen there's a time indicator - if you put your mouse over this, you can select the year, month, day and time and go back several years to see what it looked like. Work from noon on 30th October 2023, when the whole valley was green.
3. Skip forward a day at a time using the right arrow by the day. Click on the image to get it to stop panning, and drag it so you can see down the valley.
4. Marvel at how a green valley turned white within 24 hours, cycled between green and white for much of November, showed artificial snowmaking on the 23rd on the Bernkogel slope and others, turned entirely white on the 27th, and had people skiing on it on the 1st December

Saalbach has a surprisingly good snow record.
It kinda has a local (cold) microclimate.
And good snowmaking.
Saalbach's average opening date for the past 10 years has been December 1st.
It often opens in November.
The latest ever opening in recent times was December 12th, in 2014.
The week of December 16th, 2024, will be fine.
And, if not, there are another 500 resorts within 3hrs of Saalbach.
Somewhere will be open.
Relax.

@Delfie, I live in Saalbach and normally ski from around the second week of December until April. It’s uncanny how the snow often falls just in time for the season opening, which this year is on 29th November.
It’s not unusual for part of the ski area to be opened ahead of schedule on weekends in late November, when there has been a good dump.
The snow cannons are switched on weeks ahead of the opening, and it’s amazing what can be achieved with snowmaking. The last time that we had a snow drought in November and early December, there was enough artificial snow to enable skiing all around the area, and the links to Leogang and Fieberbrunn were also open.
P.M. me if you would like me to send you my comprehensive guide and a few suggested itineraries.
