Looking for recommendations for a mountain lodge, hotel, whatever, for January - somewhere to sleep up on the mountain with a relaxed atmosphere, anywhere in Europe within a 2 hour transfer of an airport. We are pretty open to suggestions. My friend was looking at the Hocheckhütte at the top of the Hannenkahn in Kitzbuhl, but it seems a bit severe to me not to be able to get back if you miss the last lift up! Also a bit limited for ‘one last beer before skiing back down.’ We’ve seen various places over the years that have been halfway up a mountain, it appeals to her, and I’m fine if we have skiing, bed, beer and something to eat. Bonus points though for an outdoor hot tub! (I saw a place up the mountain in Zell am Zee with a hot tub, but I can’t find it online now.) So, fire away with your slightly out of the way lodging suggestions! Thanks.

Oh, you are cheeky boredsurf, but none of those quite fit the bill! I’m looking for suggestions of something a little bit quainter and out of the way. I like my adventure to be on the mountain, not at the wrong airport!

https://cabanemontfort.com/ but surely all of the places that meet the 'on the mountain requirement' will have the same issue that if you miss the last lift up you're in trouble? Unless you're just after some ski in ski out accommodation somewhere in a resort but still on a mountain

Very rustic, very welcoming. Ideal if you want skiing variety but not many piste options.
Alternatively, check out Tauplitzalm - some nice lodges at and around the mountain peak. Enough piste skiing for a week. Also Langlauf, snow-shoe walking and touring skiing with some nice, lift accesible off-piste.

Yes, these last 2 suggestions are the sort of thing! Can’t find them on Booking.com or a tour operator. I know they exist, but it’s just finding their websites. Keep them coming, I will scrutinise them all later on.

Just out of interest, will these huts generally have "dorm style" sleeping arrangements?

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Ok, hotel probably not cheap. Hahnenmmos berghotel on the ridge between Lenk and
Adelboden.
Great spot I really fancy a night there myself.
Alternatively top of the gondola on the old part of Lenk; Betleberg. Accommodation is actually in the gondola station.

Budget option sadly no hot tub, would be lovely though. In the middle of the surprisingly large Stubai glacier ski area. They say they do twin rooms if you look at the price supplements.

https://winter.jochpass.ch/berghotel - up the mountain from Engelberg. No hot tub but does have a sauna. Mostly hotel rooms but there are a couple of dorm rooms in the basement also. I‘ve stayed there and the food/service was really good.

https://www.spielberghaus.at/ very nice, great food, up on the mountain so you can ski to the door but also close enough to saalbach that you can be collected by piste-basher if you stay in town for some apres or miss the last lift. Has a hot tub and a sauna!

Cough, cough! Just did a double take on this and remembered a very memorable post. Did a number of trips with Ski Beat as a result and had some great trips. Hope you find what suits your requirements and I’ll have another chuckle over your original thread

Lots of places to look at here and bookmark for future trips. Thanks all! After a few aperol spritzes too many though my friend went ahead and made a reservation for what would seem to be old SH favourite Orso Bianco in Sportinia, Sauze d’Oulx. Which is nowhere near Austria and doesn’t have a hot tub but I have heard it has mountains and beer and pizza for a bonus!

I can recommend a nice hotel I stayed at in Solden last January, it’s way above the resort up a mountain track that requires a car with snow chains or 4wd or the hotel will provide transport. It’s got its own little ski lift to get you to the main pistes and then a private piste back down to it. I was really impressed with the whole set up and enjoyed a couple of great days there. I booked it through Booking.com and it was very reasonable for a half board stay.
