There's an Android app called Snowsafe www.snowsafe.at that updates the Tirol Avalanche Report on your phone whenever the Tirol Avalanche Service updates.

Just a quick message to let you know that following on from the success of last season’s lectures there will again be a FREE Avalanche Awareness lecture in Chamonix every week this winter season.
The lectures are being held upstairs at La Terrasse bar in the centre of Chamonix. They will be at 18.15 every Monday from 10 Dec 2012 to 11 Mar 2013. NB: Christmas and New Year week the lectures will be on a Sunday night instead.
Lectures last around 45 minutes, and will be delivered by qualified Mountain Guides resident in Chamonix. The lectures cover a variety of topics, including avalanche avoidance and rescue techniques.
Lectures are provided courtesy of http://www.avalancheacademy.com.
There is no charge for attending, so please show your support for La Terrasse by buying a drink from the bar.
Have a safe season.....

Hi
Hope I'm not hijacking this thread. I just wanted to let everyone know that we've been asked to give a presentation in Morzine, so we will be there this coming Tuesday (11 Dec 2012). The presentation will be at Beanies Coffee and Ski Shop on Rue Du Bourg at 6pm. It will be free, so we hope to see as many people there as possible.
Hope you all have a safe winter.

Well, I just spent an fruitless 1/2 hour trying to find a English translation of the Chamonix avalanche forecast. A remarkable decision to produce the official version as an image so preventing auto translation
If anyone has a link I'd be grateful.

AndAnotherThing.., funny you say that, I was conducting the same search last night.
Avalanche Academy translates it into tweet-sized bites (you can either see it on Twitter or on the home page of their site).
Does anyone know if there is an organisation that records each day's snowfall in Chamonix, along with a description of the type of snow that falls each time? Obviously I want to be able to access this info online.

feshiebridge, I usually type it, word-for-word, into Google Translate (cos it's a bloody image, grrrr...). There may be local organisations that provide translations. Where are you off to?

feshiebridge, Zero-G, a hobby horse of mine. If you are on twitter avalanche academy tweet a lot of good stuff.
@avalancheacad
He's a guide operating in the valley and reports what he finds.

Thanks for all the help. I'm off to Serre Chavalier on Sunday.
It looks like I may have to type it in word for word - but by the time I do this all the freshies will have gone !!! - I 'll try the PDF route

For those planning or sharing UK (and Euro) ski tours this is a nice resource:
http://www.outdoorsgps.com/route/create
For the UK you get a printable OS map option while for Europe there is a terrain option for the road maps. What's handy is the ability to quickly estimate route distances and elevations.

Just been looking at the Ortovox training site and have to say it is pretty good with lots of animation and videos (German spoken in vids but there are subtitles). Think it has had a bit of a revamp since the last time I looked.
It's simple enough to find but the address is different to the one quoted at the beginning of this thread.
http://www.ortovox.com/safety-academy-lab/avalanche-basics
Also see there was a software update for the S1+ transceiver released on 24 Oct 2013. Will have to find somewhere to get mine done.
