Poster: A snowHead

Still trying to put together our trip, and looking at Hochkonig for one of the weeks. We have skied there in the past but only on day trips from Flachau so don't know anything about the resorts. When we were last there I am pretty sure Maria Alm was not fully connected to the rest of the area, but from the piste map it looks like that has been remedied - can anyone confirm how good the connection is? Also, what's Maria Alm like as a resort - again don't need rocking nightlife, but a bar for apres beers, and a restaurant or two would be nice.

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

We did a day there while staying in Saalbach. Really liked it, albeit, it was snowing heavily and couldn't see too much. It's definitely all linked up as there's the König tour from one end to the other. Not sure whether Hinterreit is included on the same pass, but that's not linked, albeit just a couple of runs, used a lot by racers. The Norweigans were training GS on there when we drove past.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@swskier, We did the Konig Tour on a day trip from Flachau, but pretty sure back then it didn't go all the way to Maria Alm.
Just researched online - the Sonnbergbahn that completes the link opened in 2018, a fair while after we visited.
Just looking for comments from anyone who has stayed in Maria Alm re bars and restaurants?

Pretty Village, quiet centre with a few nice restaurants and cafes. The whole area is linked now - with the construction of the Dorfjet 10 seat gondola out of the village. There is a posh apres bar/resto at the top called Tom Almhutte (Pug themed, glitterball, retractable roof, vending machine for own branded goods.... the usual!). The run down the other side to the Aberg lift is a steady red and the lift back again is another shiny 10 seat gondola. When you've done your sundowners at Tom Hutte, the Dorfstadl seems to be going strong before you hit the village again.
I love the area and think that the backdrop of the Hochkonig is pretty spectacular. The skiing is great, with a majority of reds and blues which are generally very wide and well pisted. For a smallish area (although 50% bigger than Zell am See down the road) you get a great sense of travel towards Muhlbach and back. A criticism I have heard is that it is 'samey, but I can't think of many other places where you can ski a whole day without doing the same run or lift twice. It will be a similar experience each day unless you choose to repeat and area though...... I had a week there and loved it though and have a day there whenever I'm in the area.
If you are spending a few weeks in the Salzburger Superski pass area then it is a good addition to the trip. It's only a 20 min drive to Leogang and Zell am See as well.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

This is a lovely highly underrated ski area.
I have friends in Rauris and we drive over (half hour) frequently.
Confident to report that the whole area is nicely linked.

@Klamm Franzer, Thanks for the update. We enjoyed skiing the smaller Konig Tour before Maria Alm was linked in, and your report on the village is encouraging - think we have pretty much sorted destinations now - time to get booking!

The tour is a well signed route from one end to the other and back. There are also a few runs that don’t form part of the tour route. These tend to be quieter and are worth doing, particularly the reds and blacks on the Aberg mountain. Maria Alm is the obvious base for a week in the Hochkonig region, due to it being much larger than any of the other villages.

Verry nice skiing area. Ineed all linked. Maria Alm is a nice village to stay. If you are more advanced skiers, you can also consider Dienten, which is more central in the area and also has nice bars and restaurants.
