Poster: A snowHead
|
We have only had one ski holiday which was this year in Corvara and loved it (adults & teenagers). Looking to try somewhere different - how does Obergurgl in Austria compare?
How is it for blue runs & lessons in English for (almost) beginners?
Any good for experienced snowboarders?
Are there a few good (reasonably priced) places to eat out in the evening?
How about mountain chalets / huts for a lunchtime Aperol - assume they have something like this in Austria?
How does the scenery compare to the Dolomites?
Any info welcome! Thanks

Very different looking places.
Difficult to beat the Dolomites for scenery
Obergurgl good choice for a second ski trip though.
Lots of blue runs.
No problem getting lessons in English
I've skied in Obergurgl / Hochgurgl three times over the years and it's really somewhere I would not rush back to again but fine for a place to learn in.
Some people I know go every year.
Happy to ski in the Dolomites somewhere every winter.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@bakers102, instead of Obergurgl, have a look at Lech. Much nicer village, beautiful scenery.

Obergurgl is consistently good conditions wise (due to its elevation) but it is above the treeline so moon-scaped runs primarily. Its also mainly premium hotels and a bit lacklustre in terms of trad Austrian Apres options. . . if the Folie Douce is your thing the Nederhutte may suit but with teenagers they may get bored eventually. . . Saalbach more diverse skiing and much better apres IMO

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

You could not pick two more different resorts to compare if you tried!
If you loved everything about Corvara then I would guess Obergurgl is not your best choice for a follow-up holiday. I quite like the place, but most of my visits have been short (visiting friends staying there). Most who frequent it value the convenience of staying in (good) half board hotels, with unchallenging skiing (even though there is some good and challenging off-piste to be had). There are ok lunch spots but not anywhere of the quality you would have enjoyed in the Dolomites.

Yes, having been clever enough to pick somewhere with world beating scenery, stylish mountain restaurants and lots of beautifully groomed blue runs for your first holiday you might struggle to find anywhere else quite as good in all those ways!

Obergurgl is a high altitude serious Austrian place. It comes on the same skipass with Solden, so blue wide runs and slopes for experienced boarders are available.
They have serious instructors proficient in English. Once a week you have a terrific ski schools demonstration on the mountain, dress very warm.
Most hotels I know in Obergurgl are half board places, been to Hotel Austria with Crystal and it was a positive Austrian experience with decent dinners. Dress nicely.
I have skied in France, Switzerland, Austria and Italy and happily returned to all resorts. Still nothing compares to Dolomites scenery.
It will be nice to try something different of course. And perhaps make room for a Val Gardena trip later.
Other options in Austria:
Flachau in Ski Amade
Hinterglemm - lovely place indeed, will fit most requests if not all.
Lech - if your budget will cope

Agree with comment about Obergurgl being a bit moonscape-like due to altitude. We had a fab trip there NY 22/23 when there wasn’t much snow lower down. I don’t recall the skiing being challenging, though there were some very long linked runs that tested the quads!
Insanely good lift system too. High speed gondolas all over the place.
