Hi, family off to Obergurgl (booked with Crystal) 21-28 Dec. Any top tips for the area please? Staying in Hotel Lohmann (looks ok(ish)) and boy in ski school for first 3 days allowing myself and the wife to explore. TIA.

Make your way over to Hochgurgl using the gondola link, as the bus often seemed to take an age to come. Lovely wide blues and reds, and The Top Mountain Star restaurant has amazing 360 views over Italy and Austria.
Restaurant Pic-Nic is a good value place for lunch on the street opposite the Hotel Edelweiss-Gurgl, but fills up early.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Free bus to Solden. Takes 15 mins. Fair bit more skiing there on same lift pass.
Buses usually run well to timetable. Top Express takes 15 mins each way and is reached down a red - which is not a problem at all but slightly steeper than some other runs in Obergurgl. You can take Solden bus and get off at gondola in Untergurgl to access Hochgurgl area (which is about 60% of combined area)

Hochurgl has the sun in the morning and Obergurgl the afternoon. The Nederhutte is a brilliant mountain bar with live music - an absolute recommend. Go early to get a table. Hope you have a great time.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

The difference in orientation is marginal as both are on the same side of the valley. Both face mainly west. Solden is on the other side of the valley so soft below midstation March onwards. (Solden obviously lower than Gurgl). Well worth a visit though as buses quick. Huge bowl of blues above GIggijoch which is just one huge blue with so many ways down. Good long red from the James Bond museum. Blues to left (on map) are quieter. Central area on map can get quite busy. Long drag to glaciers - 5 lifts - go early as queues on way build up - fine when you get there.
Back in Gurgl - Many tend to go over to Hochgurgl earlyish as there’s more skiing there. The main drag up the centre of Hochgurgl map can be quite busy (though queues on the lift are rare). The reds over to the left of the map are quieter and good. My favourite blue loops off to the right (looking at the map)
Obergurgl skiing is split in to two areas - not keen on Hohe Mutt run - starts off great but then a zig zag wide track which unless you do it first thing isn’t great.
Too many gondolas in Gurgl though. Too much taking off skis. The new Obergurgl gondola is a pain as it used to be a great run looping to the mid station (one route a supposed black no steeper than a blue) , but now skis off, and the walk off the gondola at the top is long. Or it used to be a couple of years ago, they may have rerouted it now. The central Obergurgl runs are always quiet.

thank you all! I'm considering buying ski boots in the town, any recommendations? We are getting the rest of our gear from Lohmann Sport(?) so with 7% discount on purchases, assume this will be where I buy as long as sensible pricing.

Sorry have no experience of any ski shops in Obergurgl as have my own gear.
Ski boot purchase can take quite a while.. bought mine in U.K., fitted liners and insoles. Took a couple of hours. Wonder if they can give you enough time in a ski resort especially if you rock up whilst they are dealing with all the equipment hitting? Having said that the advantage is that they are on hand if there are problems! I don’t know how ski resort pricing compares with U.K. pricing? Bought mine at Milton Keynes snow dome so could check that they were ok. (And had SkiClub GB discount)

My wife bought boots at RIML Sports in Oberlech last year. They were just as good as any ski shop and certainly not too busy to take a decent amount of time.

I think you will be fine if you use Lohmann Sport - it's a large shop and should have plenty of stock.
I've only bought a replacement goggle lens from them previously but the service was good and the lens works well. I also received a 20% discount as that is the promotion they were running at the time across the store. I would use them again if required.
I presume you have looked at their website but you might want to book a boot fitting in advance of your trip given it will likely take two hours or so. Fitting is free apparently. https://www.obergurgl-sport.com/ski-boot/skiboots/?lang=en
