Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Pre Christmas trip

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi
I am looking for advice for a quick 3 day trip before Xmas. 19th till 23rd December.
We are driving so needs to be within 10 hours of Calais. Plus somewhere with good snow or snow making.
Considering LA plagne mainly. But also looking at meribel with possibility of tignes( atex 2000) or courmayeur.
We have done last 2 years at chamonix but want somewhere new, not packed, with snow.
Any advice gratefully received.

Trying to avoid 20 min queues like we once had at avoriaz.

We’re going out to Verbier in early December. There are always some of the upper slopes open by then, just how much is open will vary, depending on the conditions. This was the Savoleyres sector when we went in early December 2016:

Generally, we find it like this about 1 year in three. About the same ratio it’ll be snowing too hard for us to bother, or not great and we just go snowshoeing instead. We go out principally to get our apartment ready for the season, so are fairly laid-back about skiing as we’ll be out again a couple of times after the New Year.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Going pre Xmas is a bit risky these days with conditions, I reckon I’d be going somewhere high like Tignes or Val Thorens.

Pre Christmas ski trips are our favourite. Generally do Tignes most stuff is open with minimal queues. Only thing you need to be aware of is University trips.

Tignes is a brilliant resort. I’ve spent about 8 weeks there in total throughout my life and loved every time. Once skied there on 3rd December and it was some of the best conditions I’ve ever had, and almost like our own mountain it was so quiet.
