Poster: A snowHead

Hi gang,
Wife and I planning to buy our first skis for an extended trip, after many years of 1 week trip renting.
We’re solid intermediate, almost entirely groomed pistes, so don’t really need the latest and/or greatest.
I’d been considering second hand, but a casual look seemed to say anything in last couple of years territory were still nearly new prices.
So, question was if there are decent bargains to be had from store sales. We’re near Glasgow, but could pretty much go anywhere in Scotland. We popped into shops in Aviemore during the summer - but obvs they didn’t have anything on show.
So has anyone had good luck in sales - and if so where and what time of year!?
Thnx,
Heeb

Glasgow ski club do an annual second hand sale in the autumn. I think it's mostly kids and race stuff, but there might be a few adult skis, and there'll likely be staff about that could advise you.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Yes and no, end of season usually a decent time to snag something although probably still well above second hand prices. You'll find they will start to dig out winter stock soon and have it on display. Bigger chains like Blues etc will have more stock though and knowing a bit about what you might want can be helpful. You'll find more stuff on here as people start to wind up for winter.

@Heebson, take a look at glisshop and ekosport online shops.
That's where I buy new ski + binding sets from. Good discounts (as they are large scale operators) if you know what you are looking at/for.

@Heebson, have a look at Summits in Paisley they usually have a range of last year’s (and previous years’) skis with significant discounts.

If you're not that fussed plenty of recent ex rental/demo stock seems to run through eBay stores like Ski Barn. Look ok for £100-200ish Check for adjustable or demo bindings and you'll likely be ok.
I think generally UK stock levels and thus surplus to be cleared is not what it used to be. Absolute Snow seems to run the best discounts on old stock that I've seen.

@Heebson, Massive Decathlon in Braehead. They usually have a good range of skis which are generally aimed at skiers of your ability. Their prices are very good so you might find you can afford a new pair. Check them out online.

My local shop, Snowlab, usually have a decent sale, it's in Sussex so not a 'pop in' job, but they have an online store and an eBay shop. It's a little independent shop and Ed, the owner is a top bloke too.

@Heebson, Nevisport in Sauchiehall St usually have a stack of sale skis all year round. The Bella ski sale is a bit of a lottery and members get first dibs, so any good stuff tends to be gone quickly. You can however pick up very cheap brand new ski boots - often under £100. The Aviemore sale is excellent - way more skis to choose from compared with the Bella one - not sure when that is though.
