Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Pygmy possums threatened by ski resort plans claims WWF

Awwww, isn't he cute?
A plan to revamp and expand the Mt Hotham ski resort in Australia threatens the last stable population of the endangered Mountain Pygmy Possums in Victoria, according to the World Wildlife Fund in Australia (WWF-Austalia).
...The $500 million development is planned for an area right next to the boulder-scree habitat of this tiny possum, which is the only native mammal restricted to Australia's alpine and sub-alpine zone above 1400m. According to WWF-Australia, over the last 10 years, the Mt Buller population of pygmy possums has declined from 300 breeding females to only six.
To avoid delays in construction, the developers have proposed an amendment to Victoria's Planning and Environment Act 1987 that would allow each development stage to be considered separately, and would exempt each from public notice or appeal. It would also exempt the development from an environmental effects statement, which is essential to gauge the potential impact on the possums.
WWF-Australia has called on the federal government to ensure that the development is referred for assessment under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act 1999.

I am mad on skiing but not so much I would potential make another species extict - I hope in this case the proper environmental study is done and if necessary, planning permission declined.

It's OK, according to another thread, Australia has the biggest skiable terrain in the universe, so there's plenty of room for everyone! Laughing

They are really nice when you stuff them with a macademia nut/mango and rosemary bread stuffing, gently grilled and served with an Australian chardonay butter sauce. Delish Toofy Grin

mountain mad - yeah they are aren't they Very Happy

David Murdoch - no they sleep in winter... in subnivean(sp??) spaces.... The resort fools think because they are a couple of hundred meteres away they pose no threat....

One of the other colonies is at Blue Cow in Perisher resort in NSW... it is fenced off with signs all over it as to why.... but there are ALWAYS ski tracks over it... because someone ALWAYS knows better than ski patrol about fences....and ducks them...

people
a) wake the poor bugs up and so they use their fat - that was stored using food from warmer months - and starve before end of winter

or

b) ski over their homes and collapse their little houses...

Crying or Very sad

dbiggins - at least use local fare... stuff 'em with bogong moths and season with mountain pepper stuff please!

little tiger, why is it that the cute species get best attention? Sorry, answered own question.

I was being a tad facetious, sorry. I don't think mass skiing should ever take precedence over wildlife preservation. Even if I did benefit from it as a kid.

Save the possum, Possum.

Because no-one seems to get too worried about the yellow stripey frogs?
Broadtooth rats?
Or tassie devils?

I like frogs, rats, tassie devils, quokkas and even spiders....
comes from having a father that drags you out of bed to look at the web of a garden spider covered in dew and with the moon behind it.... or bans everyone from the holiday house until the huntsman finishes laying eggs.... etc etc

had a weird childhood I guess...

That seems a very sensible thing to do.

I have a great photo of me shaking hands with a rather large huntsman that lived in my outside bathroom for a few days. Great critters they are, very fast.

stocky - yeah - he was worried she would not complete her egg sack and so all the babies would die.... once it had been completed and was set the two were relocated to a suitable tree outside the loungeroom window... (normally huntsman lived indoors as long as they stayed up high.... but my mother balked at a whole tribe of babies residing in her kitchen)

Scarpa - the boys have to be fast - because after sex the girls eat them Twisted Evil If you see one minus a leg he is fast - but not quite fast enough... a lucky boy indeed... My dad feels sorry for the ones missing a leg and gives them more latitude in their roaming than the big fat girl ones ... Our huntsman live indoors as long as they stay out of the way - mostly of my mother and sister.... My mother won't have them over the stove or other food prep areas for some strange reason Toofy Grin My sister did not like them near her make-up etc.... Ones that miss their place in life have to go live in the trees outside.... If dad feels sorry for them they may get a location that has better food prospects....
