Poster: A snowHead

Looks like my midfoot is fooked!
I had an ultrasound guided steroid shot a few months ago & have now been offered a fusion. The surgeon does not recommend it & thinks it is worth trying a steroid shot again in 9 months.
Anyone with XP or knowledge of fusion & being able to get back on the slopes?
Fusion would be my cuneiform bones (the middle and intermediate cuneiforms) as the joint is riddled with arthritis, but the bones also have cysts, so could fracture (hence surgeon opinion).
I have suffered badly the last 3 trips, but now I know exactly what the issue is - instead of blaming boots, socks, insoles & belly! I personaly dont think the steroid shot will help on the slope & I know fusion option won't happen until next year, so already accepted no trips this year... or partially accepting no trips again ever. Surgeon said he may have to deal with the cysts with fusion operation & it would be a long recovery. In the meantime, he has referred me for custom insoles!

No advice or experience, @Gored, but sympathy - sounds like a hard decision to make.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@Gored, My wife had similar surgery, sadly now can't ski but had myriad other problems also, so I wouldn't give up just yet. However, recovery time is very long and uncomfortable so be prepared for a relatively long time non-weight bearing following surgery. Also, custom soles and steroid shots were a compete waste of time and probably caused more discomfort than anything else but at least won't exacerbate the problem. Also, try and get a second opinion. The first consultant my wife was under waited so long she ended up in a wheelchair. His argument was that all her other problems would make surgery too risky. A second opinion (which we waited far too long to ask for) from Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt orthopaedic hospital in Gobowen on the Welsh border so may be close to you (an outstanding example of an NHS specialist Trust) had her in for surgery within 3 months and she can walk again, not brilliantly but at least out of a wheelchair. They do take private patients if you can afford it - PM me if you want the name of the surgeon.
Good luck, you have my sympathies.

@MikeM,
Thanks
Sounds awful
Which side of the border is Gobowen. Wonder if it would fall under right to choose.
I have found the pain is less in a central spot since the injections. However, the pain is now over a much wider area & down to my toes, but as it is spread out over a wider area it is not as severe.
Only upside is all the bucket list carnivals that are around Feb/March time + its cruising season it some far off destinations I'd like to visit.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@Gored, RJAH is in Gobowen in Shropshire, just into England (near Oswestry). But, as it's a specialist hospital you may get the right to choose from Wales. I do know Welsh patients get access to a specialist Neurological Trust in Merseyside as well as to the Countess of Chester if you are in the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board area, so it's worth a punt. I know they used to treat Welsh patients up to 2019 but not too sure now. It would be worth a phone call to them to check if you're close enough to travel.

My ski buddy smashed his Talus bone , I know different bones but very important for skiing , after falling over a small cliff above Cervina many years ago . After many ops has had his ankle fused they had to get the angle right for skiing , still skis like a pro as he used to just needs careful management , tablets , icing and customised boots . Don’t give up .

@MikeM,
Thanks. I think right to choose in NHS England but not sure if you are limited to England only hospitals (certainly helps with trying to get adhd diags) - i guess so? As health is devolved.
Shropshire not far. A knights move away, so will follow up your PM
Thanks
