Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Val Cenis at New Year

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi All
So we’ve got a week booked for our second family ski trip next March to Montgenevre and can’t wait!
After a shocking summer holiday where we all got quite poorly we are now also considering a trip to Val Cenis, December 28th for a week as we are all off work/school anyway and prices for self drive are fairly good for a peak week.
Question is though, what’s the snow usually like around this time at Val Cenis, it will only be our second week of skiing apart from many days at the Snowdome as well!
I know you can’t predict the weather, but would be good to know what it’s generally like at this time.
Thanks in advance Very Happy

Generally pretty good, a lot of the slopes are north facing so hold snow well and there are some gentle slopes for you to find your feet…you must do the escargot (long green run) from the top of the mountain all the way back down to the village.

Your Val Cenis ski pass will also give access to the other resorts in The Haute Maurienne Valley, namely Aussois, La Norma, Valfrejus and Bonneval sur Arc.

We will be in the area skiing at the same time and looking forward to it. It’s an easy drive with motorway all the way to Modane and the last 30kms or so a gentle rise passing some great views.

In echo, emphasis ? of @andmelffion, yes it has ideal aspect of almost the entire slopeset being North facing in substantially West to East valley aspect that gives good ground foundation to keep snow late and hold onto early falls too.

They have extensive cover of snow making too on all their major piste, from top to base.

Ideal destination in piste ease of use terms with very accessible blue piste right the way from top most lift point. Some very good, wide gentle and expansive piste to progress within on upper piste area.

As noted, we can't predict coming snowfall, but a good layout that works well in spite of not having the headline big altitude of some more famous areas.

A very convenient road access too, with long gentle gradient/wander up the Maurienne valley from near Chambery area. Very good for a road trip there.

A real soft spot for our family to visit there, recommended from us.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Most of the slopes are north facing, except above the lake. At New Year it could be very cold, gloomy and icy. Sharpen your edges and bring warm clothing.

That time of year I'd go to Valloire with a range of slopes.
