So if you know you are going by train you can grab a return from £88 to Paris and then book the French side at a later date.
I just need to decide whether to have an evening in Paris on the Friday or travel down all the way on the Saturday

Have you ever done it? It's really not an issue. 2 stops on the metro.

9th July the direct option opens. Out Saturday, home Sunday. I don’t know the cost but isn’t flexible. I don’t take skis, so I have one big bag and crossing Paris is just 2 stops.
I might go Friday and have a night in Paris.

No I haven't ..but I don't fancy getting on the Metro with a ski bag, boot bag, and a pair of skis..I might be easy without these but....

I've done it lots of time, with ski bag and a holdall (boots go in that). It's not really any different to lugging your gear to and from a car, or from your car to the airport or through the airport.

How much do the trains down to e.g. Bourg St. Maurice typically cost if booked early when available?

re cost of fares, it usually costs me about €100 return from Paris, but it can be as little as €70. Just depends on days and times.

Sadly SNCF probably wont be running the night train to Briancon for the SOPiB bash again this year

And how does one plan a journey to the Alps by train and get the best fares without knowing the times of trains from Paris GdL to Bourg St Maurice? Book the Eurostar bit on spec?

If you book an early train to Paris. I usually get the 6:31 or the 8:00. There are multiple trains to BSM but I also allow a couple of hours to cross Paris, get some lunch/snacks for the second half of the journey and not to stress about any delays etc.
Others get a Friday Eurostar down and stay the night in Paris.
Coming home, I usually book mid/late afternoon home to make sure I can make the connections.

You know it makes sense.

I have booked 0800 or thereabouts going out, and just after 1500 coming back. Room at KingsCross on the Friday night before departure.

I pretty much always get the 08:01. Can get the 06:32 from Brighton, gives me 45 minutes at LSP, which has always been enough

It's such a shame. Went to book the snow train today for last week of Jan and it is double the price it was last year. £199 each way in standard class.

I was waiting to check the prices before booking via Paris instead! £88 return.

Price is a bit outrageous when you consider that it isn't even direct. For anyone whose done it before it's easy to take the RER and sort the connection yourself. SNCF delays are covered with Eurostar as well as when I got stuck on the train back from Moutiers last December for 3 hours they just put me on the next train back to London when we arrived at the check-in at Paris.
I guess this might be slightly more convenient for families but I was expecting £99 each leg...

I always book the Eurostar and SNCF legs separately as it works out cheaper. You can't book them both through Eurostar until the Paris - Bourg tickets are released which is usually about 3 months before travel. By that stage, the Eurostar prices have usually gone up,

Dave D. It only shows outward Saturday and inbound Sunday ‘direct’ via Lille.
I’m sticking with the Paris option and will add an afternoon/night in Paris on the way down.
