Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Folks I am considering a trip to this resort next February. I am going to fly to Barcelona then it's about 120km to the resort so am contemplating car hire Vs taxi/transfer.
I will be booking everything myself as it's what I like to do!
Any recommendations about getting a taxi or other travel thoughts and experiences.
Also anyone been to this resort and have anything good or bad to say!

Thanks so much in advance

With no obvious bus transfers like bens bus, I am a bit worried a private pre booked car might be unreliable! And also what happens if our plane is delayed!!
Maybe the slight stress of a car hire is actually not so bad
A conundrum! Especially for someone not so decisive like me!!

We had a lovely lunch in Ax, while driving from Toulouse to the Grandvalira ski area. It was warm and sunny at half term. I did have a look at skiing there but there were many slow 2 person chairs that would have been difficult to get 2 children onto with 1 adult.

That 120km drive goes right over the Pyrenees. The section from Ax to the Andorra border is steep. Sounds like a hefty drive to a small ski area up from a spa town. I’d recommend flying to Toulouse or choosing a different ski area, closer to Barcelona. Look at La Molina in Spain, the 3 areas in Andorra and even Font Romeu or Les Angles in France.

We lived in Toulouse for three years. Had planned to meet friends in Soldeu but the snow said no. Skied in Aim instead. A very French resort, everything closed for lunch. In the queue to go back up, people were queue jumping. At which a beret wearing man said “ this isn’t the alpes you know, get back in the queue.” ( in French) they did. The black and the red are designated by a fence. But a lovely little resort. Only went there via Toulouse. When we did go to Soldeu, every time we were stopped by customs, who would ask what we had bought. Baguette and chocolate! They searched the car ( English plate) to find a baguette and chocolate Very Happy

Thanks folks so it looks like we are doing this! It's a done deal I just don't know if I might need snow chains to get fro Barcelona to ax Les thermes, would anyone be able to advise!?

The area doesn't get much snow.

Ax is very low.

Winter tires should be fine.

I live in Andorra and drive through Ax often.

A private transfer will be expensive. It's much easier to get to Ax from Toulouse if that's an option.

Cars hired from either Barcelona or Toulouse will not be equipped with winter tyres. You'll need chains to travel through Andorra, and although you probably won't be taking the route through Andorra, you probably need chains in the car to travel into that part of France. I would have them just in case anyway. The route you should take will be from BCN to Puigcerda and then go in the direction of Porte-Puymorens. Go through the tunnel there and then head down the hill to Ax.

@Tommycricket, Winter tyres and chains are essential for crossing the Pyrenees, but also be aware that in a heavy snow event the passes over the mountains along the French/Spanish border can be closed. In that event it's a very long drive around via Girona and Perpignan.

One year we were the last car into Andorra from the French side before the roads closed, and 10 days later leaving Andorra we had to go south east through Spain, and round via Perpignan - six hours after leaving, heading for the UK we were within sight of the Mediterranean!

Toulouse is definitely better. Most (good) hire car companies will include chains at that time of year.

In Ax, make sure you get your boots off at the end of the day and warm them in the thermal stream in centre of town. Lovely!

When I would drive Spain-Andorra, on approach many garages would sell chains.
