@Aqua66, The ski quality and lifts will depend on where you drive to.

@Aqua66, nope. No idea how good the buses are either.
Who is suggesting you had skiing from the village anyway

Servoz should be included in the free train travel for Chamonix valley tourists (I know it is in the summer). But I think there is only one slow train an hour, and for quite a few of the lifts you will need a bus from the station as well.

@rjs, so you’d need to change at the Cham Sud zoo

@Aqua66, Servoz is a nice enough place and more affordable than further up the valley near to the actual ski areas. It is however very inconvenient.
It is a 15 minute drive from the closest area (Les Houches), 25 minutes from Les Praz, and about 35 minutes from Argentiere (the Grands Montets)
If driving be aware that Chamonix is gradually introducing pay car parking in all of its lift areas. So budget for about £15 a day depending on where you ski.
If you have a great deal on accommodation, would prefer a low key location, and don’t mind spending about an hour a day round trip getting to and from your skiing then fine. Otherwise I would look somewhere much nearer (or a single bus ride) from the lifts.

@Aqua66, well it's a perfectly pleasant little village, up and coming, but there's no local skiing ...

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

IIs that right about parking? I parked at Le Praz a couple of years ago and Gd Montets this season for free.

Gd Montets is going to be paid parking either next season or the year after, can’t remember the exact details. It’s going to be a massive pain, as it’s the overflow lot for the whole village, and there’s nowhere near enough parking in Argentiere without GM being available.

You know it makes sense.

It's inevitable. These places just aren't equipped for the world and his ice-axe and crampons to roll up and dump their cars without payment. You can't park in our little village centre for more than 40 minutes without payment.

@jedster, yup
Le Tour last winter, Vallorcene the year before and Les Praz next winter for definite
GM same or the following year.
On a positive note, they may apply a couple of lorry loads of fresh tarmac.

Les Contamines seems to manage a huge influx of cars but clearly it is more of an issue in Chamonix.
That said, one would have thought your ski pass paid for the car park.
But equally if a car load is paying 50 Euro each to ski, a car park fee is unlikley to make much difference.

that's not generally the case. And if it were, it would be very divisive, if "non skiers" including local people had to pay to park!
I'm in favour of car parking charges, in general. There was a great hoo-haa when they were introduced, with time restrictions, in the main street in Saisies but the charges weren't large and did mean that the spaces weren't all filled by 8 o'clock in the morning. I'm in favour of the charges in our village here, too - or cars belonging to the people who work in the shops would fill them all day!
Car parking space is a valuable resource. How else to ration it?

Here in the Zillertal, virtually all the car parks are free, except those right in the centre of Mayrhofen. I believe the car park next to the Ahorn lift there is reduced to €5 for the day by scanning the lift pass.
Appreciate that's absolutely nothing to do with Chamonix, but just putting the info out there for comparison.

Well it depends on the resort layout. In Les C (or e.g., Le Tour or Gd Montets I'd have thought) the car parks are really only for skiing. You'd not park there to shop in the village.

@jedster, my perception is that people park in the car parks for the week (period?) they're staying there ... ?
I mean, they certainly leave their camper vans in the Carrefour car park
My irritation with the Chamonix Mairie is that they seem to think that discouraging cars will be a good thing (yes, I know that globally it will, but you can't walk to Chamonix from Geneva and other options are rubbish).
