Hi all, just planning for next year.
I'm looking at Edinburgh to Chambery but as the flight lands at 18:40, this makes the transfer to BSM and on to Arc 1800 potentially very late on into the evening.
Assuming I can persuade the apartment manager to let me in at about midnight, what's the best way to get from BSM up to Arc 1800?
If the answer is taxi, what are the relative costs etc?
Any other suggestions for low cost quick transfer from Chambery to Arc 1800?
Currently its an SNCF bus to BSM.

@Deveron53, It's a bit early to find train or transfer times but looking at the current train times there is a train at 20:53 getting in to Bourg st Maurice 2 hours later. The winter train timetable has not been released yet and it may change slightly . You will need a taxi to the railway station from the airport then another taxi up from Bourg st Maurice. What day of the week are you looking at? There may be transfer companies available but you will probably need to research this closer to your arrival date. Most rental agencies have facilities for late arrivals.

It'll be a Saturday to Saturday I'm after. Currently looking at 11th Jan to 1st Feb.
Cool Runnings has quoted me 320 Euros! (one way) Which is a bit much. It would be cheaper to get a hotel in Chambery and wait until the morning to take the train. On the way back is fine as the flight is 19:40.
I had originally planned to do the whole 3 weeks in my motorhome but given the cost and hassle, it's easier and cheaper to fly and get a cheap apartment.
Staying at Arc 1800 gives me good access to the whole Paradiski area. I had planned to try and get a day in Val Thorens (for old time's sake!) but that might have to be arranged while I'm there. I can get public transport all the way but it might be a long haul!

Is this a return trip. Taxi, train, taxi will be about €150. Also have a look at the bus services. TBH I wouldn't worry about it now; few schedules are released this early.

@Deveron53, a word of advice to anyone flying to the mountains, try and land as early as possible as this allows plenty of time for problems like delays, snow etc.
18h40 is really winging it to get up to resort. There is a reason ski companies like early flights.
I'd be tempted to go with your plan of a hotel in Chambery and travel in the morning.

There's only one flight per week from Edinburgh to Chambery so that's chalotte...

@Deveron53, Fly to Geneva where there are many low hassle transfer companies.

I know it's not the answer to your question but a flight to Geneva will probably be less expensive and offer a more conveneint arrival time. Change trains at Geneva central and again at Chambery. You will probably get there in time to get the funicular up to 1600 and from there the Navette to 1800.
I never fly to Chambery but often fly to Geneva. I have a friend who lives only a few miles outside Chambery. He never uses that airport or Grenoble but uses Geneva or, if someone else is paying, Lyon.

Any particular criticisms of Chambery? Why is it unloved?
I checked times and yes, the flight lands in Geneva earlier BUT, the flight departs a lot earlier meaning it's either a sparrow-fart set off from Aberdeenshire or a hotel at Edinburgh the previous night (I've got a 3 to 4 hour journey). Also it's twice the price so coupled with the extended cost and time from Geneva, I think as a backup I'll look at a hotel in Chambery or Moutiers on the Saturday night.

If everything goes right at Chambery then it can be great, it’s really close to the Tarentaise so transfer times are shorter than the other bigger airports.
The problems historically have been that planes can reasonably often get very delayed or diverted, Chambery can be quite prone to bad weather meaning landings get diverted and in the best cases you get coached to another nearby airport to get home. It’s also a tiny airport and particularly with package holidays where multiple planes land around the same time, it turns into complete chaos both at check in and arrivals.
To be fair I haven’t flown in there for many years now but after a successive delay and a diversion (plus working a ski season as a rep and seeing it all first hand on a weekly basis) I viewed it wasn’t worth the risk. Maybe it’s got better down the years. Online reviews would suggest not really.

@Deveron53, One of the reason is that there are very few flights to Chambery. During the winter there are only 8 flights a week from Birmingham and even then only at weekends and non during the rest of the year. Whereas there are lots of flights to Geneva with a couple every day.
I see there is a noon flight from Edinburgh getting to Geneva in plenty of time to get the train to Bourg st Maurice.

I've actually found a direct flight from Aberdeen to Geneva on EasyJet. Gets into Geneva at 16:30. Looking at the trains from Geneva, it might be a close thing again. What's the time of the last Funicular/Navette from the BSM Station?

If you are flying to Geneva, then you could pick up a shared transfer with SnowDrone. They predominantly serve Val d'Isere / Tignes and are the transfer company of choice for many regulars but they will also drop off at BsM on the way through.
https://snow-drone.com/
This season just gone they were charging €80 each way (see the Tignes thread for a Snowheads discount).

@Deveron53, last year I took the a edi-gva flight on Friday evening (also coming down from Aberdeen), private transfer to moutiers (about €150 I think) then train through to BSG Saturday first thing and up on the hill by lunch time. Way home went on Saturday afternoon train to chambrey then bus to Lyon on Sunday and flight back. Great thing about it was almost 2 extra days skiing and didn’t feel rushed which often is the case flying from Aberdeen as geneva is the only option and only 1 flight a week with long transfers
