Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Hope I’m not treading on any toes by starting the new season thread for the 3V . Mr P went out to St Martin today to “do a few chores”. Attached is a photo of the works for the new skiers tunnel into St Martin under the main road (well, it’s not under anything yet!). I understand the plan also includes improving the piste before the tunnel to make it easier. I guess that means all traffic up the mountain at the moment, which at this time of year involves a daily convoy of big trucks, has to head through the middle of St M Shocked ..

Exciting! I can’t quite tell, is this replacing the old tunnel at the bottom of biolley? Or is it a diversion to the current route?

@abricotine, replacing the old tunnel, and from Mr P’s view today, it’s going to be pretty darn big!

The new salle de fête and wellness centre was looking good from the outside back in August. I reckon it will be open this winter. Confusingly the big hoarding at the building site says it opens Dec 2025 but I think that’s a typo,

Perty, some questions as the authority on all things St Martin.

We've skied 3V lots of times before but are staying in St Martin for the first time in Jan and residing in Lodji. I'll be driving my electric fun bus (ID.Buzz). I can pay to park in Lodji but is there alternative free parking, ideally close to a charge point?

Finally, for a number of reasons I won't be able to travel with my usually skis, I usually ski on my much loved Elan Wingman 86Ti. Where is the best hire shop in St Martin to get something similar and that isn't beat up and seasons old?

Thanks!

@NoMapNoCompass, There are no charging points in the main big free car park (at least there weren’t when we were last there in August, but things are constantly improving). There are charging points in the courtyard in front of the Huit à Huit village shop down by the Marie. I can see they are marked on the village map. They are quite tucked away-turn left directly in front of the shop front door then you should see them at the left hand end of the courtyard. They are under cover and I don’t think there’s a separate cost for parking there. I’m not sure how many there are…possibly 3, so I guess they might be busy.
Best hire shop..probably Jean Sports about 50 m to the left of Lodji as you come out of the front.

Petition to save the Adret Chairlift - Please sign! It's in French but very easy (Pays is country and the UK is Royaume-Uni).
The Adret Chairlift is located just below The Rond Point and is a popular route back to link to the Loze Express and return to #LaTania
It's also goes high enough to link to the Saulire Express mid-station (and Folie Douce) and prevents all skiers having to return to La Chaudanne to get out of the Méribel Valley which will increasingly become a chaotic bottleneck.
As well as the Ronnie, users of popular restaurants such as the Adray Telebar, Bistrot Lilie, Le Cepe and Manchu will also be hit by the removal of this lift - which no doubt is just to save money and nothing to do with safety and the benefit of their customers. No doubt there will be sustainability arguments - and then they host World Championships, the Tour de France and the Olympics!
There was a previous petition to save this lift about 15 years ago when its removal was rumoured - but Méribel Alpina and local officials did listen (unlike Courchevel with Coqs for example) and the plan was shelved. So it is worth signing and sharing!

@Bergmeister, I think it’s a matter of numbers and making the last pitch more beginner friendly. Novice and nervous skiers find getting down that last pitch really tricky, particularly at the end of the day and if more experienced skiers are skiing around them. It also creates moguls just outside the bottom end, so spreading out the skiers should help that too. I think it’s the main reason people say staying in St M isn’t beginner friendly (though I’d take that ski down to the village over virtually any piste into Meribel Chaudanne any day!)

St Martin new tunnel progress report.
Some photos taken today by Mr P. Considering the extent of the earth moving, it's not as big as one might have thought. The main road is still officially closed till 15th Nov and I guess there's a huge amount of concrete and structure to go over the top to take the weight of the traffic. There's going to be some reprofiling of the slope on the uphill side on the way to the tunnel entrance too I think.

It doesn't seem that much wider that before?

But I guess the issue was really that the slope steepened leading into the tunnel - from looking at the photos it now looks like the tunnel is chicane like in that it goes more across the slope than straight down as before.

I'm not there, but I think with a layer of snow in it, in reality it is probably about twice as wide as before. It's definitely still perpendicular to the road, but maybe @NoMapNoCompass, is right, the route in has been turned into a chicane to make people slow down. The question then is, what have they done to stop the pile up just before the chicane?

I noticed they have tested the snowmaking in VT the past couple of mornings. Large areas of what they made is still there so that is a good sign.

I'm looking forward to what tonight will bring in terms of the real stuff. Here's hoping it's more than expected!

Yes used them twice whilst staying in either Meribel or La Tania - though was pre-covid so a few years ago. Very good experience - our kids got on well with the instructors who were all British back then - they always seemed very engaged. No complaints for us us.

as long as it sticks around I really don't mind how deep it is! I've been watching the Lac Blanc camera this morning at the blowers were running until about 10:30 this morning. if you squint it almost looks like a piste!

We used them a couple of times with our kids aged 8-12 and the experience was very good each time. I would believe the 5 star rating, I've only heard good things about them

We're staying in Saint-Martin in January - first ski trip away with our young 1 year old son. He obviously won't be skiing (this year at least) but we're trying to source a stroller/pushchair with large wheels to hire as myself and wife will be alternating child care duties while the other skis with the rest of the group. We've been told that there may be somewhere in LM or VT what we can hire one? Does any one have any more information or advice. We're keen to hire if possible as it is one less thing to cart through the airport along with our ski bags.

Not sure if its free but there are charging points in the (relatively) new Caseblanche chalet complex to the side of St Martin 1 lift. You could probably park there long enough to charge up. Agree with Perty about ski hire, we usually get our skis serviced there.

Toying with the idea of going for Méribel opening weekend fly late on 06th and return late on 09th. Good prices on flights and accommodation but usual high cost for transfer unfortunately. It would mean 3 days of skiing for 1 day off work.

I’ve done opening at VT a few times but keen to hear folks experiences of opening in Méribel sector? I plan to stay in Méribel centre should I get brave and book!

@skimottaret, wow incredible pictures! With the snow due this week and low temps it looks like a promising start to the season.

I am in that decision loop that likely many of us have been in before ie: do I spend money and go early or do I save and go for a longer period further on in the season!

Hi,

Im heading to Les Menuires for a week in Jan.

Few quick Q's:

Can Folie Douche in VT be accessed on the LM ski pass? I saw a youtube vid saying you could, but is it actually possible?

Are there ever any black friday deals i the 3V or LM on ski passes?

Thanks!

As long as the Boulevard Cumin is open yes you can but it's a boring flat run and you need to he in time to get the last Reberty or Doron chair back from the La Masse base.

Sorry no idea on lift pass question.

It is possible to access the Folie from the LM lifts (Bruyeres or Mont de la Chambre) but you have to ski down a black run (Goitschel) to get there.
Then as above to get back to LM after you have to take the Boulevard which brings you out below LM and you have to take a lift to get back up to the village.
So it is possible but a 3V pass is not a lot more than a LM pass and gives you a lot more options.
Never been any Black Friday deals on passes in the past.

If you take Chardons it would be a short walk from the bottom of the run to the Folie. You could do mostly Chardons and then one pitch of Goitschel.
Ultimately if you are a red / black run skier and coming to LM for a week I would be surprised if you only bought a LM pass and did not want to explore the rest of the 3Vs at all. The cost of a one day extension is the the same as the difference between a week LM pass and a week 3V pass so if you are going to do 1 3V day you may as well get the 3V pass for all the days.
