Does anyone have any specific recommendations for traditional pensions (i.e. inexpensive boarding houses) in major Austrian or Swiss ski resorts?
The kind of thing I mean is somewhere with basic facilities, 80s/90s decor and a hearty breakfast.
It would be for two skiers one adult and one 11 year old child.
What I am looking for is:
Central location in a major Austrian or Swiss resort i.e. Lech, St Anton, Solden, Ischgl, SFL, Zermatt, Verbier etc. EDIT:Equally happy with ski in ski out.
Short walk to lifts
Breakfast included
Half board option would be a plus but not essential
Extra points for very close to the lifts and high quality breakfast/dinner.
I'm OK with shared bathrooms and no TVs etc in the room, although a sink and a table would be a plus.
I'm capable of searching via the resort websites but personal recommendations are always good.
I recognise most have been converted into 4* hotels by now but I'm hoping there are a few left.

@Henwc, I can highly recommend this place in Hinterglemm. https://www.hotel-wolfgang.at/en/
It's literally right next to a lift (T-Bar but it's very short and links to the other lifts, or you can walk a few min's. Ski back to hotel is possible) and part part of the Saalbach-Hinterglemm "Ski-Circus" area. Technically a hotel but breakfast only with an option of a small selection of evening meals if you want, although it's not really what they do, an option nevertheless.
I stayed there with my 16 year old in Feb (I think we chatted ref the BB in Arabba when I was asking for ski buddies, you will recall he sadly passed in March. I booked on that so maybe meet you there? Think you said you had booked). It was perfect. Breakfast was good, hotel spotless, owner was very helpful and friendly. A few mins walk to the centre of the town, bus stop (ski bus and normal bus) a few mins the other way. Private bathroom, TV in room with great wifi so you can take your firestick and get UK tv if you need.
Salzburg is about 90 Km away so short transfer. You can get the local bus for around €16 each way from the airport which is what we did, or a transfer with https://www.snowcampseu.com/airport-transfers/ for around €70 each way. Private transfers are available at extra cost.
I would go back in a heartbeat but not sure how it would work on my own otherwise I would have booked already. Would have gone back with my son but of course can't now. Hope to go back this winter but need to see how.

@Henwc, Pension Penhab is breakfast only at reasonable price. Pension Falkenstein further up the hill is on my list but never been. Reviews are excellent. * edit, both are in Hinterglemm* .Lastly, my whole group loved Hotel Bergdiamant in Flachau and I would recommend it without hesitation.

I'd generally prefer to stay somewhere where you can go out and ring the changes for an evening meal. Or just have a light snack if lunch has been generous. I rarely enjoy being a captive "half-boarder".

In the Zillertal I've stayed at the Pension Alpenrose in the village of Lanersbach. It's just a few hundred yards walk to the Eggalmbahn gondola which links into the ski areas on the Eggalm, Rastkogel and Penken (Zillertal 3000). There's also a frequent free ski bus service from Lanersbach up to the Hintertux glacier.
Also quite a few nearby places to eat in Lanersbach in the evening.

@toyah807, Thanks, all look good, do you know if the Pension Falkenstein close enough to the pistes to ski to/from or is it a walk up/down the hill?
@Origen, I see your point on the half board, most places have quite good takeaway options too. I have had really excellent half board but only at 4*+ places where they charge moddest supplement for a 7 course dinner. Not really in my budget for high season though, which is why I started this thread

Pension Kirchblick in Lech is exactly what you’re looking for.
For halfboard you might like the Hotel Omesberg, also in Lech. Dated 4**** with excellent kitchen.

That’s probably because you haven’t been to half-board lodgings with good food!
Many snowheads bashes, for example, have half-board setup. I love the convenience of walking down there in my flip-flops (ok, exaggeration, sandals instead) but not having to go out in my winter boots just to have some supper is high on my priority. And the food had always been as good as any I could find trotting all over town.
For skiing trips, half board is my first choice. I would go as far as booking a slightly more upscale and more expensive lodging with half-board over a cheaper place and having to shell out for expensive dinner. Failing that, my 2nd choice would be self-cater apartments. Grab some grocery after the lift closes, shower and cook, then relax for food and drink afterwards taking as long as I care. The last thing I want after a day of skiing, and after a nice hot shower, is having to bundle up to go back out into the cold, trot all over town on icy roads in the dark just to get fed. Not to mention having to stumble my way back to my lodging if I happen to drink a little more than I should (though I’ve stopped drinking lately so that last point no longer applies)
I’m as happy to be a “captive” half-boarder as I’m a “captive” of ski lifts. The latter beats walking up the hill…

He's looking for a basic "boarding house" and half board not essential. "En suite" and huge TV not essential. Bed and breakfast OK. It's a pity that so many places have gone upmarket and expensive.

To me, the key is not going out in the dark and cold for dinner!
Half board obviously cost more than self-cater. But not having to cook has a strong appeal also, especially when the food is good. It’s basically “going out” to eat, without actually going “outside”.

@Henwc, Pension Falkenstein is ski in/ out (according to the website, but I think it may need a few steps up the slope to ski out, looking at it. Though ot sure it would get a review score of 4.9 if wildly inaccurate) but in fairness is a little up the hill so doesn't satisfy your central location request.
