I was just wondering about the Skis and Boots that are being used:
Skis
- They seem to be around nose to eyebrow height
- They are obviously pretty narrow....are they narrower than a normal Piste ski - as they appear to be?
- Are you better with a slightly softer ski?
- I'm pretty sure there are Mogul Specific skis.
Boots
- Are you better with softer, or stiffer boots?
- Is there such a thing as Mogul Specific Boots?
Poles
I assume these are shorter, as they ski through the troughs and plant the Pole high on the Mogul.
I think this is one discipline where technique has changed little over the years, though the skis are now shorter and a little wider.
Any thoughts welcome.

I always thought that the skis were 'vintage' design, with very small sidecut, so effectively the old straight ones.
not sure about the boots, I'm thinking what you'd use in slalom.

Flexons used to be the boot of choice for many. They may use Full Tilts now but I’ve no idea really.

I think moguls were skied on 2m to 2.05m skis, back in the day....Current skis are certainly shorter and look wider....with some (eg.Rossignol) looking wider than others (eg.Hart).

I seem to remember FT purchased the Raichle / Flexon patent and moulds at some time in the past. just revived the old Flexon models.

I'm currently trying to give away a pair of flexon pro's and a pair of kneissel .
The guys in FT's think they're in some funky cutting edge equipment...

They all seem to be on the same ski, or at least the same top sheet. I would have expected different brands. Maybe there is a standard ski that has to be used.

I've seen at least 3 different top sheets on the Lady's skis. There's mostly black Harts; there's mostly red Rossi Heros; and mostly white, with a little heart in black (I don't know what brand it is), but a lot of people are on them.
I haven't seen enough of the Men's competition to see what they're on...but I think I saw some Harts and Rossignols.

In Japan I came across a number of zip lines, where a line of moguls had been created top to bottom on a slope. I can't see the attraction of making a 100 mogul turns, especially in a resort full of knee/waist deep powder.

Skis tend to be ID, Hart and I think I've also seen a Rossi. Full tilts for a lot of them from what I can see, similar in Freestyle re boots, but not skis.

You know it makes sense.

My understanding is that they are more or less on GS skis.
Boots according to preference.
I think huge myth that you need softer boots for bumps or powder. Its technique that absorbs the shocks, not the tech.

The ones I saw finish in the men's, only appeared to be on ID skis, in white with wavy line pattern.

Interesting.
- Full Camber
- Torsion Box
- 66mm waist
- A bit wider than an Old School ski
- Radius 25m (around half that of a straight ski)
- Longest length 182
It's sort of like an amalgam of old and new.

Just checked ID....yup, that is the mostly white skis I've seen - with their Logo, which looks like an upside down heart.

That's similar to what I ski on piste (and off when I have to)

After a bit of Googling, a good Mogul Ski apparently has 3 characteristics:
1. Hard Tails
"Having harder tails are necessary because when the base of the boot and farther back of the ski impact the crest of the mogul, you want to be sure that the ski doesn't give. This will allow you to push more against the mogul as you end the turn -- if the ski is soft in the back, you'll be fighting the ski rather than turning on the mogul. "
2. Soft Shovels
"When you come up against a mogul, you want the ski to have a good amount of give such that the mogul doesn't throw you. As you flex your knees up into your chest upon impacting the mogul, soft shovels will help you respond to the mogul and also will reduce the amount of shock to your knees. Soft shovels act like shock-absorbers."
3. Narrow waist.
"Tight turns are the key to success in the bumps. In order to avoid getting trapped by a mogul and having good maneuverability, you should have thinner skis. "
