Poster: A snowHead

I have the following dilemma: I will ski 3 days either in Tignes or Courchevel (4-7 April). I was set to go to former, but latter has got excellent snow cover this year. Have not been to either before, but starting from March I usually ski higher, like Zermatt, so I was not considering Courchevel for April until continuous snowdumps started to create the possibility in my head. I know Tignes will be great, but I feel like this year early April in Courchevel may be exceptionally good, because of the amount of snow which seems better than on the average. I mean it is easier for me to ski in April than in March, so I will always be able to go to Tignes, Saas Fee, Zermatt etc but probably not always early April is that good in Courchevel as 2024. Would the snow quality be good even in the afternoon (if I go there, I will be based inn 1850)? I reckon there are mostly north-facing slopes, but unsure. What would you do? It is just 3 days so either areas are way too big, but I am looking if there are notable differences in snow quality / temperatures. Many thanks for sharing your Snowhead Wisdom can't decide and i need to book accommodation

1850 was perfect during that week in 2023. But instructors described the new snow/temperatures as like a January. Val Thorens’s slopes will likely be very good. A punt.

@epon,
Have you looked at the relevant threads in the Snow Reports forum?

Thanks, that's a bit my worry, slushy snow in 1850. If I wanted to ski VT type of terrain, I would just choose Tignes rather than go from 1850 to VT and back. But from your post I gather every year 1850 could be great in early April

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

The start of April is a great time of year to ski and as you say snow levels above 1800 are above average , neither area is going to be a punt . Tignes with Val is a legendary ski area but Courchevel is one if the great all round ski resorts .

I would ski Tignes rather than Courcheval. Whilst Courcheval skiing is great, it is slushy and heavy snow in the afternoons. Tignes can be as well, but because so much of it is above 2000m it tends to hold really well.

I'm intrigued. Please enlighten us all on that @red 27. Regardless, it's a good job the skiing remains world class

All things taken into account Tignes is higher and will undoubtedly be a better place when looking solely at the snow quality. But being in 3 valleys for half the week only, I can stay above 1850, go to VT twice, ski Mount Vallon / nothing below Mottaret in Méribel. So I reckon it’s a risk worth taking. I will do Tignes in April for sure, but not this year. I’ve just always wanted to ski in 3V and the snow coverage this year looks historically high.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Finally went to Tignes as the tropical cyclone was a bit scary to stay at 1850. What a fabulous place, totally loving it. High quality skiing throughout the warm days if you choose the slopes wisely. Nice food afterwards. I’m so impressed 3V next time but this is just top class spring skiing - as good as it gets

@epon, glad you like it. A pretty hard place not to have a good time.

You know it makes sense.

First time to Tignes this season a couple of weeks ago after years of 'ignoring it'. Whilst it wasn't spiritually/architecturally satisfying the sheer scope of skiing and snow quality is hard to ignore and it was a great location for a middle aged lads trip of mixed ability . . .would def return on this basis alone; would have no hesitation in making a March/April booking
