Poster: A snowHead
|
Hi all,
My partner is a vegetarian and has recently been diagnosed as dairy intolerant so is now eating what is effectively a vegan diet (can have eggs). We are heading to Val Thorens on Sunday, do any vegans have recommendations for places to eat both on the slopes and in town?
I am hoping we are not going to be limited to self catering for the entire week!
Thanks in advance.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@UtahGetMeTwo, that may be true, but I suspect that existing off chips alone for a week would be a pretty miserable diet!

I'm vegan, and do often have to rely on soup, salad and chips!
It's much better than it used to be tho... Can't remember the names of all the places we visited (apart from John's Scandinavian, who have 2 nice places - one's a diner and the other a restaurant - they and both did vegan options), but these ones are listed online:
https://www.happycow.net/europe/france/val_thorens/
There are also mountain restaurants that do vegan options. This one springs to mind, eg their Wok stir-frys for lunch:

I think most places will offer something vegan, these days, even is you have to ask for no cheese, or bacon bits!

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

if you venture over to Les Menuires at all, Roc 7 (the restaurant at the top of Roc 1 lift) did a lovely Minestrone Soup which should be suitable.

You need to be alert / mindful that French cuisine is centred on dairy products amongst other lovely ingredients. For example, don't be surprised if a burger bun (other than obviously brioche) contains milk / traces of it (I note that your partner is vegetarian - this is just a general comment). Or that most sauces include butter / cream. I would strongly recommend that you make sure that your waiter / whoever takes the order is clear that your partner can't tolerate milk / dairy and ask for sauces on the side, salads without dressings (or on the side) etc. Good luck.

The restaurant at Farenheit 7 hotel (same group as Roc 7 restaurant in Les Men) does some nice stuff too.

In case it is useful for others, here is a summary of the places we ate:
Wok-ski which is at Les Chalet du Thorens linked above. That was a satay noodle bowl and was delicious.
Favela, a black bean burrito and sweet potato fries. Again, that was great.
Jasper's, a tofu stir fry which was enormous and tasty but a bizarre dining experience. Waiting staff were having several shots whilst working, you couldn't tell who were staff and who were guests.
The Frog, this was a burger without the brioche bun or cheese. Staff were British so it was easy to explain the intolerance.
Other than that we self catered for the rest of the week. Strolling around town looking at menus yielded little results. We did try John's Scandinavian as that was mentioned above, we were told they couldn't do any vegan options so that was a little disappointing!

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

You should come to Switzerland where chicken is the vegetarian option!
