Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

For those wondering how the Skyliner lift replacement is going at Mt.Bachelor, below is my query to them and their response. I don't do IG or FB, and their last blog post was August 23rd; sounds like they picked up on that.

(start of response) Thank you for reaching out. We intermittently release updates about our progress with skyliner on our blog, instagram, and facebook. Please follow those sources for the latest updates. We are expecting the Skyliner lift to be operational in early December. We will also pass your message along to our marketing team and request some updated posts.

Best regards,

Subject: Why the silence on Skyliner?

[EXTERNAL]
Most ski areas toot their horn quite loudly when a new lift is going in. Daily updates, photos, videos etc. If Mt. B is doing so, I can't find it anywhere on your site, or Powdr's, or by googling it. Seems like a missed opportunity. Where can this information be obtained? Thank you.

Because it's looking like a strong El Nino most of this winter. We generally don't do very well in Banff during El Ninos. I would call it more realistic than pessimistic. The fact there are a couple of white strips open at this point in the year is normal, and nothing to indicate the rest of the year will necessarily be good.

Concerning yes. But “big reduction” might be too much. 5 inches a decade out of about 400 in the PNW isn’t exactly diabolical.

Plenty of resorts in the Northeast have lost 1-2 months of their season in the past 50 years.

Killington (for example) used to make Oct to Jun. Now it struggles to last Nov to Apr.

Big reduction in snow and cold.

The storms will arrive via an atmospheric river, a meteorological phenomenon where a flow of moisture from the Pacific Ocean resembles a fire hose that delivers near-constant rain and higher-elevation snow to the western United States or British Columbia

"This particular atmospheric river setup extends for more than 7,000 miles from all the way across the Pacific Ocean to the northern part of the Indian Ocean basin," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Mike Doll said.

Have been in Whistler since 21st. Every condition possible during that time. Temps are way too high. You can still ski down to Whistler village just and in fact that run is decent in the morning - not so late afternoon. I was here in Jan/Feb earlier in the year and it was similar, ie very variable snow but there was just more of it then. Quite scary how little is open just now. After a horrible opening for the Pacific coast states & province, with almost no areas fully open yet, finally the forecast is looking good. Snow expected every day for the next week, including a couple of foot + dumps.

We need it. Thus far El Niño has been as predicted for this part of the world....warm and wet. We had our warmest December in history.

Just back from a trip - we skiied at Palisades Tahoe for a few days. I'll be paying it off in installments rolling eyes
Snow was in short supply - what was open was good but there was really limited terrain and a shedload of people - they seem to have so many Ikon pass holders that the place is totally rammed Day tickets were > $240 as well. We had snow one night which helped and there are a few storms coming through, look forward to going back when there is snow.

The Ikon and Epic passes have caused day tickets prices to be out of this world. If you only want to ski a few days buy the day pass of Ikon/Epic before they go off sale. Park City is over $300 now for a day pass.

Dang, that is crazy! Any package deals if you are doing lodging?

Meanwhile, winter showed up this weekend. More on tap throughout the week as cold air pushes down from the Arctic. Low pressure storms are stacked up off the North Pacific and inbound. Will be good from Whistler BC down to Mammoth and across Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, Northern AZ, New Mexico and Colorado. Even the NE is seeing snow - VT, NH, ME all seeing snow.

This morning at Bachelor had deep pockets of wind loading and knee deep powder turns.

Heavy snow fall though out the PNW and inter Mountain West since early Tuesday morning. High winds - 50 mph with gusts up to 100 mph being recorded in the high alpine. Most resorts are running with limited operations or closed all together. Snow totals mentioned below should double by tomorrow morning as the second wave comes through.

A foot past 24 hours for Whistler-Blackcomb
Mt Baker and Crystal Mt. Washington reporting 13 inches
Timberline and Bachelor reporting 9 inches - Tline closed due to high winds.
Schweitzer, ID reporting 11" - lower mountain only

Snow will be falling in Wyoming and Utah later today with decreasing temps. More on tap Friday/Saturday as yet another storm comes on shore.

I am going to Banff on Thursday 18 January. I am kind of glad I am not there now as it is forecast to be -40C on Friday morning. The good news is that there has been about 50cm of new snow and I'm guessing it's power, owning to the temperature! Very Happy

I was going to say 'Where's it gonna end? but the fact is it's not... Confused It's absolutely insane.

These prices have to be preventing those who might only ski a few days a season from going Sad We've done a few North America road trips in the past where we've just turned up and bought day tickets. That looks increasingly unaffordable now.

Europe is heading exactly the same way. Day ticket prices have increased astronomically post-covid.

The ‘storm’ in BC is, so far, not a big storm for them. We got 8cm in SunPeaks on Tuesday. Wednesday (yesterday) was bluebird, some nice stashes but still ‘early season’ in terms of snow depth, and both on/off piste it was easy to find rocks, but pistes generally in good condition.
The wind is making conditions interesting - about 10c of windchill yesterday, and todays minimums at -27/29, but with windchill showing -38…. Will update later on what that was like.
On the plus side, the sun is shining!

Most of the storm energy is focused a bit further South of the Canadian border. Whistler is probably right on the border and just a bit North of the low pressure trough coming on shore late Thursday/early Friday. Temps going very cold as others have mentioned.

The next storm is teed up and marching SW out of the Gulf of AK. High winds are on tap again. Upper mountain lifts will be on wind hold. Mt Hood Meadows is struggling to keep up with the feet of snow that has been falling. Power outages, icing have made it difficult as well.

Plus it's a holiday weekend for the USA. So, people will be in a bit of a frenzy to ski powder this weekend, which will be pretty much all of the US West Coast and Inter Mountain West. You name the ski resort, and the answer is, "yes, there will be fresh snow to ski." This is a big storm with feet of snow being forecast in the high alpine. One caveat being that South of the Tahoe ski areas, like Mammoth might only see scraps. But it will march across Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Colorado. Northern Arizona and New Mexico.

Oregon ski areas are suggesting skiing with avy gear and a buddy. Snow emersion can happen in deep wind drifts and not just tree wells. Seriously, don't go into the trees if you aren't skiing with someone.

I'll be breaking out my avy gear and beeping inbounds tomorrow with feet of snow forecast for the Cascades to fall from Friday AM into Saturday AM. Please be safe, and use good judgement. Don't let that powder fever get in the way of making smart decisions! For all you Snowheads in the storm path, enjoy!!! It's been awhile since we have had snow like this. snowHead

I think no shovels is likely 2 things:
Some of them are just customers (as opposed to patrol) so they're not carrying anything.
As they have the head exposed the critical digging is done and swinging a shovel could cause more harm than good.
