If you have a favorite mountain hut in the zillertal valley I would love to hear about it. We will be staying in Mayrhofen next week but plan day trips from Kaltenbach to Hintertux. Would love your top tips to find those 5* venues on the hill and what makes it so great... horror stories also welcome!

I really like Kristallhütte in Kaltenbach on a sunny afternoon.
And Hannes Alm in Königsleiten is good too.

I liked Waldhütte, on 75. A little off the beaten path, small menu, lots of character.

Kashütte in Hochzillertal is good, family run, small and cute inside, big terrace outside. I was there last week, ate a delicious burger and fries on a cauldron. Neighbors had some fancy egg nog drink that was hot and had little wooden spoons sticking out of it - they swore it was delicious. Well worth a visit on a sunny day. It’s tucked into a sheltered spot from wind and it’s a sun trap.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Depends on their definition.
We also ordered cheesy chips but they called it a really fancy name and it was fries. It was good!
Also a classic home made Apple Strudel.
Look for the hit website link on the Hochzillertal-Kaltenbach website and there is a full menu to review.

Vogelnest at the bottom of the red track on the way to Eggalm is good from memory.
Umbrella Bar / restaurant was pretty smart in Gerlos (bottom of Fussalm Express lift).

@Dubmuffin, at the Unterbergalm (take cash, also now closed on tuesday's) they have a handful of items that would be suitable for vegetarians.
Off the top of my head, Spinatknodel, Spatzle, salad, fries, kaiserschmarrn, strudel, germknodel. There's likely more and I could ask the OH if you wanted?

If you end up going a bit further down the valley, there's a great one on the Speiljoch near the middle station called Kohleralmhof.

@swskier, Cheers - carb heavy then:) I guess they will have to make do with cheesy chips and pasta. Personally I'm looking forward to kaiserschmarrn!
@schnitzel_skier, @jellemr, Thanks, first time in the area and based in Mayrhofen so I guess it'll take a while to get our bearings

@Dubmuffin the Kreuzjochalm in Zillertal Arena is pretty good for vegetarians (or at least for the one I travel with). They do a veggie version of a Tirolergrostl, and they have a daily vegetarian special (and on the menu they specify what the special is on each day of the week)
Another option in the Zillertal Arena, this time in Gerlos, is the Umbrella which does pizzas, a good salad bar, and several vegetarian pasta options.

@Dubmuffin, checked with the OH, they also do a couple of soups (tomato, Vegetable) and a vegetarian burger.

@Dubmuffin, my daughter is vegetarian, some places are better than others, we had to relocate a couple of times when the only option was chips!
At the top of the Finkenberg lift Granatalm had a great lentil and butternut squash soup (I think this changes daily) and Penkentenne had vegi burger and jacket potatoes.
Good luck!

I have a love/hate for the Wedelhutte at Kaltenbach. Good music vibes and buzzy atmosphere. Always have a fun time. But service can be rude and it’s expensive. I can imagine spending an afternoon drinking here…..but then would have to stay the night!

Had the worst pea soup ever at Tuxerjoch Haus yesterday. Won’t return. Today’s Tuxer Gerstensuppe at Spannagel Haus was excellent. Will return.
