Poster: A snowHead

Hi Folks,
My 20th Wedding anniversary is coming up in late November this year. We did our Honeymoon in Lake Louise, so I'd like to do something special, don't have much time, so I was thinking of 3-4 days. I have skied extensively, but never been to Zermatt, when does it normally open for skiing? Ideally I would be there for the anniversary in late Nov, but could delay till Dec.

Not sure when the various Zermatt sectors normally open @johnboy, but Mrs MA stayed up the mountain at Kulmhotel Gornergrat for a couple of nights for our own 20th wedding anniversary, one February a few years back. Highly recommended

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@mountainaddict, Cheers, that looks pretty cool, just checked and looks like a reasonable amount of lifts open from early Nov. The skiing would be a bonus, just want to chill out and enjoy the scenery!

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@johnboy, should be a fair bit open by then - if you want to make the journey a bit special then you could do a bit of the glacier express on the way. Chur - Zermatt. Easy train down from Zurich.

The resort as a whole usually opens first weekend in December. There is a decent amount open beforehand though.

@johnboy,
Keep any eye out for the Zermatt-Cervinia World Cup racing - they are bound to happen some season.

I was in Zermatt the week before Thanksgiving in 2021, starting at about November 20th. Only the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise area was open, and mostly above Trockener Steg (Furgg was the lowest you could ski). Gornergrat and Rothorn ski areas were not yet open. But you could get plenty of fun skiing in, and even cross over comfortably onto the Italian side - but similarly it was not open to Cervinia yet. It was still plenty of skiing and would have been more if I were a better skier. Be aware that the parts that were open were mostly not for beginning skiers. There's some nice easy stuff on the Italian side but you've got to go through Theodulpass to ge there and that's a little hairy. (I don't know if any of the new lift infrastructure helps with this).
The nice part about that time of year is that while this was technically still pre-season, we didn't find anything that wasn't officially open, the crowds were manageable, and we got a crazy low rate on a chalet rental that was like 10% of the New Year's Eve week price. A fully open Zermatt is a glorious thing, but November is no slouch. It's beautiful and an amazing trip.
Do remember though that weather is a huge variable. You might have better or worse luck than we did. But I'm confident SOMETHING will be open.
