It’s actually a UK record not just a Scottish one.
Like the heatwave in the Alps at the moment it’s perhaps not that surprising given all the background heat following a record breaking year in the northern hemisphere. Wouldn’t be surprised if we end having the snowiest May on record or something equally bizarre

It was reported on the 5pm radio news up here…. Quickly followed by “not for long though, it’s now 11 degrees and heavy rain”

Glenshee has 4” of snow remaining of just 18% of slopes. The two storms washed almost everything away at all levels.
Traditionally, even in the good years, didn’t the Scottish slopes often have their best snow conditions February to April?

Look on youtube for the Les Deux Alpes racing.
Starts on the snow covered glacier & race all the way to the town.
The crashes & pileups are epic.

It isn't the warmest January ever, it was the warmest January DAY ever.
There's a difference.
The previous UK January high was also in Scotland if I listened properly to the news.

Megavalanche in Alp d'Huez was the original event of that type, other resorts have copied it. In the L2A event a few years ago one of the leading riders went down early and took out almost the whole of the rest of the field.

Due to its maritime climate, the Scottish Highlands has never been - and never will be - like the Alps in terms of reliable snow cover.
All is not lost though. As others have alluded to, despite the recent thaw, we could yet see skiing into May. In one fairly recent year, Scotland went from a position of no snow and no lifts spinning in March, to ski areas re-opening in April.
Keep up the snow dances!

So Achfary reached 19.9ºc yesterday. The phonebox will be getting another coat of paint to mark the occasion!
2012 is the mother of all comebacks in terms of saving lost causes, no uplift at all in any of the five snowsports areas in March, CairnGorm and the Lecht reopened early April and CairnGorm skied the whole of April and nearly the whole of May.
