Poster: A snowHead

We have been told by our holiday company that there will be roadworks next winter between Innsbruck and Cortina. As a consequence, they are flying into Venice rather than Innsbruck. Unfortunately, these flights do not start until the end of January, which is after when we want to go to Cortina! Does anyone know where/what/when these roadworks are, please? I am looking at booking the flights/transfer/hotel myself so we can go when we want to go, so it would be useful to have more details of the alleged roadworks. Thanks

Could be Brenner Base Tunnel works, that is a very major project going on between Innsbruck and northern Italy at the moment, though I don’t know where or why it would be affecting the road.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Thanks. It wasn’t adversely affecting the road a couple of weeks ago, so I don’t know why it’s different next winter?

It'll be the Luegbrücke. Only finding info in German and Dutch... It's nearly 2K long and they'll seem to close one side of the motorway, routing both direction on 1.
Won't be much fun

If you're looking at booking flights, transfers and hotels yourself then why not just fly into Venice? Far more flights to Venice than to Innsbruck from UK, somewhat shorter journey to Cortina (according to AA route planner), and easy transfer with Cortina Express.

It is the rail tunnel work that will start affecting things later this year. Supposed to be going on for a couple of years. Inghams are using Verona instead of Innsbruck for next winter for a lot of their Italy resorts.
Longer transfers but hopefully less disruptions due to weather.

Yes, it’s Inghams who are flying into Venice (with EasyJet) next year instead of Innsbruck, but EasyJet flights from Manchester to Venice don’t start until 25th January for some reason.

We have booked a hotel in San Cassiano for early Jan next year and was planning on flying into INN to (hopefully) use the new Alta Badia shuttle transfer. We haven’t booked flights yet but sounds like we might be better going to Venice? What would you do??

The issue is that a viaduct on the northern side of the pass is becoming dilapidated and needs to be replaced, which is a very major undertaking. A local mayor wants the whole thing put in a tunnel and is refusing to advance planning permission until this is agreed but both the operators of the Austrian autobahns and the federal government say that is both impractical and unaffordable. In the meantime there are going to be rolling contraflows and truck bans from early 2025, cue chaos which is likely to go on for a long time ie years see https://tirol.orf.at/stories/3240840/
