Poster: A snowHead
|
Good Morning all.
We want to go to Sauze D’oulx in mid march for a short trip but we’re thinking we might be better off staying in Sestriere because it’s a higher resort .
We’d prefer Sauze because it’s prettier but we might save our selves going up a few lifts to reach the snow each day.
Any hints or tips would be much appreciated.
TIA

Have you been to Via Lattea previously? It sort of depends what your priorities are.
Sestriere has one fast gondola to top of Mt Fraiteve to then access Sauze and Sansicario, or alternatively your straight into Sestriere side of skiing.
In Sauze, its couple of chairs gets you to Sportinia which is sort of the "heart" of the Sauze side, but yes its more of a slog over to Mt Fraiteve and involves a pretty slow 2 man chair for the last bit and even more of a slog over to Mt Motta side of Sestriere. if it goes warm again then yes Sauze is a bit lower so might not be best of conditions.
So Sestriere is more convenient for pick and choose where to ski and get there quickly. Staying in Sauze you'll end up skiing more in Sauze as its a longer trip to get elsewhere. Personally I found Sansicario above Soleil Beouf and Sestriere - Motta / Banchetta to be the better slopes / conditions.
Sauze is shorter transfer so might get you 30 ins extra on the slopes if your doing at early flight into Turin and hoping to ski half a day?
Also need to factor in what accomodation you can find.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Just chatting with a friend who is in Sauze this week and he says they are actually allowing skiers to remove skis and download on the bottom chairlifts Clotes and Sportinia (don’t know about Jouvenceaux) back to town as the snow is so bad on the home runs and people are struggling to get down safely.
So in answer to your question if the snow conditions don’t improve by March well then Sestriere would be better as higher.
He did add anything over 2000m is good on piste and they’ve had some good off piste yesterday after the fresh snowfall.

Good morning
thanks for your responses.
So we've booked Sestriere. We're still interested in any hints and tips.!
We'll probably try to get to Sauze next time a little earlier in the year.
thanks

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@jirac18 - the Sportinia and Joveanceaux lifts always allow skiers and walkers to download (the latter possibly just from the mid station) - that's not specific to this season/current conditions.
The Clotes one doesn't surprise me because there's only one way down from there, and with it being (in good conditions) a nice easy slope, it is mad busy at the end of the day. Letting people download when the snow is bad low down seems very sensible indeed. Saves people downloading on the Sportinia lift and having a longer walk back to town.

Suggest you check out Sauze Online. They do a weekly snow report, as well as hints and tips. From what they've said though, the area is still struggling.

Next week's snowfall may well determine how good (or bad) March is.
There is (currently) 30-50cm forecasted for Via Lattea in a week or two.

We stayed in Sestriere in 2022 and Sauze last year and have to say we much preferred Sestriere. It's quieter for apres but the condition of the local pistes was just much better, especially at the end of the day (I hated the ski home in Sauze). We just loved dropping down to Borgata ("black" piste 4), then get the long chair up and all the runs back down are just a blast. There are also some great little piste side restaurants around there; we particularly loved Chisenotto for good value lunch and cheap carafes of wine. Enjoy!
