That I can watch, but that thing where he clambered up Nelson’s Column gives me disco knee every time!

Just superb. Informative, enthusiastic and no nonsense. He was a very brave man and a great hero to young people growing up in the 1970s. I clearly remember him falling off the bob sleigh and showing his bruised bottom on TV!! Thank you for posting that Kenzie

Looks very slow.
Think a few folks have topped 80mph nosefirst in recent years.

I don’t remember watching that episode, but I remember watching his bobsleigh run very clearly and the bruise on his bum he had after he fell out. Another of his escapades that springs to my mind was his skydive from 25000 feet. He was definitely a hero of mine as a kid and made a lasting impression. I doubt that I missed many episodes of Blue Peter.

Yeah, @Whitegold, would have made much better telly and traumatised a generation of kids if he'd smashed himself up.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Have you seen the non-aerodynamic standard issue RAF jumper he was given to do it in?

You know it makes sense.

Are there any videos of Whitegold doing it?

Anyone here done this? Is it open to public, or invite only?
Apparently an old friend of mine did it early 90s. And a current family friend says he’s a member (quite likely, there is a lot of money in his family background).

I loved the discussion about the goggles, which were declared to be really fine for whizzing along at high speed in a shower of snow and ice. Compared to the heart-searching which goes on on Snowheads about what different colour lenses people can't ski without. And yes, the jumpers were ace.

He had an offshoot 'Go With Noakes' which ran from 1976 to 1980. The very first programme, on the annual Grasmere Sports in the Lake District, included a clip of an ageing cousin of our family narrating an anecdote. He died just a few weeks before the programme first aired, so sitting round the TV watching the broadcast had added poignancy. I ought to see if it's on YouTube.

I have just watched the Nelson column one (just about old enough to remember it the first time) - absolutely terrifying - though I did like that ‘Reg’ was scooping out the bird-sh*t sitting in the bosuns chair with a fag in the other hand - classic 70’s. There’s another one linked of Peter Duncan cleaning Nelson’s column 6 years later which is almost as bad - same guy helping him!
