We're heading to Megeve tomorrow with the kids. Trying to save money, we didn't rent equipment or get lift passes until Tuesday as we're a bit broke, and had planned to play in the snow tomorrow afternoon and get settled in. But the weather isn't great and there's no snow in the village at all.
So my questions are 2. Firstly, can you pay just to use the cable car to get up to the snow without using the lifts? And secondly, if not, where near megeve can you drive to that is higher and will have snow so the kids can have a play?

You could drive up to Les Saisies where there will be snow at village level. There is a toboggan slope near the "Signal" multisports centre where there is also an enormous free car park (though this is a very busy week and it will be pretty full). You can also walk up a prepared track to the "Benetton" restaurant which sits on a col with beginner drag lifts up both sides. You should be able to find places up there for the kids to play - no need to use any lifts. Generally if you just want to use a lift to get up the mountain a bit you can buy a pedestrian ticket but they can be quite pricey. I hope you find somewhere to have some fun - Megeve is not a resort for people feeling hard-up!!
Les Saisies also has the "Mountain Twister" (near the Signal) which the kids would enjoy though that's not cheap, either. If you want a low cost lunch when you're up there I'd suggest the place at the top of the "Magic carpet" lift. Chicken nuggets and chips are good value (for a ski resort) and the kids could play in the snow right there. It's mostly outdoor, though with a covered area too and, usefully, a loo. But you'd need to get there either very early for lunch, or very late - it gets busy. How old are the kids?

@Flipjango, have you looked at combloux?
its close to megeve, not sure what the conditions are like at the bottom of the main lift (there is a free car park there), but higher up it looks good on the webcam.

village level in Combloux is unlikely to be any better than Megeve. The bottom of the main lift is a little bit higher than the village but on the "sunny" side of the valley. Les Saisies is about 40 minutes drive. It's possible that Notre Dame 1350 (which you drive through to get up Les Saisies) will be better, but the extra drive up to LS is probably worth it.
I think Les Saisies is a FAR better resort for families than Megeve, but then I'm biased!!

@Flipjango, I can't imagine either Megeve or Combloux villages have much to offer at the moment. My guess is (@Idris would be the one to ask) that there would be slushy snow near the parking for Cote 2000 which you can drive to or take the free navette. But I don't remember there being an actual play area.
Or possibly the top of the Chamoix bubble from Megeve village, assuming you can buy a pedestrian pass (but that is slightly lower). I can't think of anywhere suitable for play at the top of the Mont d'Arbois gondola.

Thanks everyone. We’re not totally poor, but the extra couple of hundred pounds for a half day on the slopes when we have two beginners who couldn’t get lessons till the next day anyway just didn’t make sense. We’re fine paying for food and drinks though. And our airb&b was really cheap in Megeve so it works out well! Thank you.

Looks like @rjs's and my posts crossed suggesting the bottom of Cote 2000. That is likely to have snow, and while it will have suffered over the past few weeks it should stay cold enough tomorrow. The free navette (ligne 2) runs from the bus station, then the road up near the casino heading past the Mont d'Arbois gondola.
And if you need to ask anyone, remember to say "Cote Deux Milles" not "Cote Two Thousand".

NDB 1350 didn't look very good from across the valley. Les Saisies was good on Wednesday but that was before the rain.

@origen the kids aren't little, 9 and 11. But by the time we've settled into our accommodation, been to the supermarket and got our bearings we'll only have a couple of hours before it gets dark so a bit of sledging would keep them happy for a while. The pedestrian ticket up the bubble will be 81 euros which seems crazy, so les saises sounds like a good plan. Thanks

@Flipjango, I'd suggest you go up and find the snow as soon as possible when the light is still good and do the supermarket later - the Intermarché in Praz sur Arly is on your way back and will probably be open till 1930.
