Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Is Chamonix any good in mid-April?

Spring skiing in the American West is incredible. Wondering how it is in Chamonix. I'll be in Geneva in mid-April and plan to rent a car for a day trip to ski. Last year, I tried Megeve, but it was all slush, rain, and dirt. Chamonix is a higher elevation, so I was thinking it might be worthwhile.

Any advice would be very come indeed.

Thanks!

I'd considered that, but it's an extra hour both ways. Better conditions in mid-April than Chamonix? If so, that might make the extra time worth it.

@ladyermine, is this for piste skiing or off piste?

Seriously, the Grands Montets area in particular goes much higher than Megeve and is north facing so on average it will be as good as anywhere accessible from Geneva. April into May is prime time for the high mountain touring you can access from Chamonix's lifts, if that's your thing (probably not if you're just doing a day).

@ladyermine, as per @Arno, Grands Montets should be as good as anywhere for a day trip from Geneva. If you had more time Verbier would have a bigger area and greater variety of slopes open but for the cost of an extra 40 min drive (you can just drive to Le Chable and get the lift from there rather than driving up the hill to Verbier)

most likely piste since the snow conditions might be a little yucky.

Well, the reason I ask is that there is some big mountain skiing in Chamonix that could be fantastic in mid-April - as Arno was alluding to/saying.

But tbh I think in your situation it would be a case of if you get lucky with the weather go to where ever. If not do something else (hiking).

Nowhere has the altitude of Chamonix:

Wow @arno and @robinch, this is incredibly helpful. Le Chable seems like a genius hack for making Verbier work.

Grands Montets is top of mind for Chamonix, but do you think Flegere and Brevent will be any good at the time?

April is often unsettled and you can hit great conditions anywhere. La Clusaz, Flaine, Avoriaz. Cham is worth staying the night if you can, fantastic alpine town full of history.

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

Yes , I had Grands Montets in mind when saying it was north facing etc
As @davidof says you can get really great conditions in April if you get some snowy spring showers. I’ve skied waist deep powder on the Montets in mid April (which had all turned to slop a couple of days later)

Fingers crossed, booked our first family ski trip to La Clusaz first week in April on the back of Le Grand Massif’s snow record.

Make your decision where to go for the day at the last minute - ask after the resort snow conditions.
