My guess would be either they have a had a recent incident in Japan with lithium batteries, or they have had a new and very attentive security scanner who spotted them. I’ve flown many many times with heated boot and glove batteries in my hold luggage, also transceiver and torch batteries without issues. I’ll have to be more careful in future as I very much doubt I’d find the glove batteries to buy.

We forwarded on our luggage from tokyo on arrival (kept 1 suitcase & a rucksack packed in the case). Suitcase came with us, rucksack with a week worth of laundry is probably now stinking out haneda, waiting for collection. OK it cost us nearly 9000 yen to leave it there….

Every (I think) time I have checked a bag in for hold luggage I am asked whether I have batteries in the bag. It's also in the Ts & Cs when booking flights. Not surprised! Glad they saved them for you.

I find sex toys are best kept in hand luggage as long as it's not the bondage stuff that they think might be used as weapons.

Alert a member of crew who will appear with a fire extinguisher. If it's in the hold it just carries on burning.
As an aside, Apple Airtags are permitted in the hold by most, if not all, airlines - despite the battery.

For your own safety, you should keep all the lithium battery in hand luggage. When a battery starts burning in the hold unnoticed, it can bring down the plane, with you in it!

I find it can be a problem when the ground staff start taking hand luggage off passengers at the gate to transfer to the hold when the plane is full. It can be a challenge to remember to remove all battery-powered items, and by the time they're all bundled into a carrier, it ends up almost as big as the bag that is being taken away
I'm pretty good at remembering not to put them in the hold bag in the first place though.

I am always worried about my therm-ic bluetooth batteries as they are crazy expensive, especially since I have the ones that last extra long.
The batteries must be in your carry-on bag.

@Gämsbock, it’s fine to take batteries up to the size of a fairly large power pack in your hand luggage, you just can’t put them in the hold.

If batteries are installed in devices, they ARE allowed in the hold in checked baggage. It is loose or uninstalled/spare batteries that are prohibited.

I was in Rhythm yesterday picking up some remind insoles & they sold batteries for Thermic’s - might be worth a look if your passing (rail on the right of the checkout queue - along with other heated stuff)

@skimachine, which ones is do you have please? My old sidas ones are slowing dying so I fear I may have to splash out on a new set for next season been looking at boot heaters/heated socks etc… thanks.
