Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Train strikes in Germany - again this weekend

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
It seems highly likely there will be ongoing strikes by train drivers employed by DB in Germany from next Monday 8th. Exactly how much of an effect this will have and how long it will go on for is currently unclear it could be quite some time. In terms of folk travelling to Austria through Munich for skiing the following is likely / possible

Munich Airport S-Bahn - during the previous one day strike before Christmas there was a basic service on the S8, maybe one an hour. There would be an effort to keep at least this.

EC trains to Innsbruck & Italy (for the Dolomites) - unlikely to run at all

Regional trains Munich to Kufstein / Salzburg - should run as not a DB service, if so could change in Kufstein for onward travel to Innsbruck etc though not sure about travel onto Südtirol, this would need to be checked.

The Bayerische Oberland trains for Lengreiss, Bayerischzell, Spitzingsee etc would also likely run as same company as above but doubt any visitors use this for skiing

ÖBB Railjet trains between Vienna & Zürich / Bregenz - should be unaffected as the strike is only drivers so should be no issue to run between Salzburg & Kufstein.

There are many variables here and it is likely if this goes on for any time the courts will get involved so very difficult to give exact infomation. Likely to be crowds of confused tourists at train stations!

Update on this, it looks as if there will be strikes from tomorrow evening until Friday evening. There is a further court case this afternoon which might result in the strikes being cancelled but that looks unlikely.

Rail travel within Germany is likely to be disrupted until Sunday given that trains etc will be in the "wrong" place. The strike also affects Transdev - the company that runs many of the regional trains from Munich. So no trains to Kufstein etc.

In terms of the effects this will have on people arriving at Munich airport, unlikely to be many S bahns into town, no definitive info currently but possibly one an hour. No EC trains to Austria & onto Italy, whether they will run on Saturday is unknown. Few regional trains to Kufstein & Salzburg though would assume the ÖBB Railjets & Westbahn trains will run. If you are arriving or departing on Saturday unless you leave lots of time to allow for cancelations etc maybe best to book a transfer.

Ah well, it looks like Ill have to got to the airport and pick up my wife to save her the problems described above. Go the back way and save also no doubt the heavy traffic on the A8

@jafa, If it is Saturday it might be OK, I would guess that the Transdev trains to & from Kufstein will be OK by then the EC ones less likely. Up to date "info" at https://www.bahn.de/service/fahrplaene/aktuell

Further update on this. The regional trains to Kufstein etc DO seem to be running to a normal timetable despite the published info yesterday. However the connection from Haupt / Ostbahnhof to MUC is not good. The S1 is running about one an hour (might have to change in Neufahrn) to Ostbahnhof via Hauptbahnhof. The S8 is not running properly because of ongoing work on the track so no service until Monday 22nd, there is a shuttle service to Ismaning and then a replacement bus but would not suggest this to anyone but locals. If you are planning on transferring via train in the next 10 days you will need to allow a good deal more time than normal.

My sister went back to Munich airport last Thursday, and there were signalling problems between Rosenheim and Munich. The train remained on the platform at Rosenheim for an hour and then didnt stop at Munich Ost. That meant she just got to the airport literally an hour before her flight was due to depart.Fortunately, she only had hand luggage.

Ironically the bus from the main train station was quicker than going on the S Bahn. The bus driver was fantastic, and asked her to get me to find out which gate she was departing from and dropped her right outside Terminal 1 B, then told her to run............

I still think for the sake of my own self preservation!!, Ill drive to the airport, rather than her risking various trains not running. She has a suitcase, whereas if it was hand luggage Id not worry so much.

@jafa, I think that would be best the information coming out is very confusing. The S bahn has not been good in recent times. There was a period last year when there was no S bahns to the airport due to replacing the platform at the airport, why they couldnt schedule the track replacement at the same time is difficult to understand. It will certainly mess up anyone travelling from the centre of town to the airport. Normally the S8 is the quickest method but in current circumstances the airport bus is probably best, even when it is running normally the S1 is slow.

This also has a knock-on effect to some EuroCity services in Switzerland, so check your timetable.

Am I understanding the email from ÖBB correct that the RJX 369 from Zürich to Salzburg will be fine on Friday even though it goes through Germany?
"ÖBB trains via the Deutsches Eck between Salzburg and Kufstein will run as scheduled"

More trains strikes! to quote from DB

Quote:
The GDL has announced strike action for the period from Wednesday, 24 January 2024 to Monday, 29 January 2024. This will result in massive disruptions to Deutsche Bahn's long-distance, regional and S-Bahn services during this period. The emergency timetable only ensures very limited train services on DB's long-distance, regional and S-Bahn services. We ask our passengers to check their connections 24 hours before travelling. When travelling on long-distance services, we advise you to reserve a seat in any case.

If you plan on using the train this weekend to get to or from Munich Airport you better leave lots more time.

New Strikes announced for ths week 6 Days OUT !!

The German Train Drivers' Union (GDL) has called for a new strike on the German railways. There will probably be no trains running again that will inconvenience winter sports enthusiasts. The strike has been announced from Wednesday 24 January to Monday 29 January 18:00.

This will impact on anyone travelling by train from Munich Airport

Regional Train Companys can also be afectred due to the Train Line Dispatchers being in the GDL Union

@stanton, last time the regional trains to Kufstein did run. The Austrian services running on DB tracks also ran ie Railjets using the track between Salzburg and Kufstein, also both the Railjet & Westbahn trains running from Salzburg to Munich. The EC trains from Munich into Italy via Innsbruck almost certainly wont run same with the ones between Zürich & Munich. Biggest pain for ski tourists is likely to be lack of S bahn connection to the airport.
