@Ram80, whilst that article accurately reflects the decline in Cairngorm skiing (thanks to the funicular fiasco), I don't think it necessarily implies a decline in skiing at the other well run Scottish ski areas e.g Glencoe and Glenshee?

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

A quick reminder to anyone thinking of trying some of the resorts mentioned above - the definitive guide to snowsports North of the Border can still be bought 2nd hand on eBay, "Skiing in Scotland" by Heather Bashing

Folks have been posting the same stuff about Cairngorm on here for a decade or more.
It's nothing new.
Scotland no longer has the can-do culture or collective management, finance, and govt skills to run grands projets.
Ferries, parliaments, funicular railways... It's the same old tales of chaos, failure, decline.

They used to up to 6500 a day on the cairngorms, only 1000 in 2023. |
That is an article on the well documented decline of Cairngorm (due to HIE funicular obsession). That is not the same as decline of Scottish skiing.
I suggest you edit thread title?

I’m at a bit of a loss as to what makes the A9 dualling ‘a particularly incredible fiasco’? The original timescale was hugely ambitious and was in part predicated on a Yes vote in 2014. As things turned out we still have a ScotGov whose capital borrowing is VERY limited and for whom the majority of the budget is determined by what HMG is up to via Barnett Consequentials. The capital component of this has taken yet another hit because of the cancelling of the parts of HS2 which delivered Barnett Consquentials (and delivered actual capacity / journey time improvements for Scotland <-> London flows).
It was clear post referendum that the capital budget needed to sustain the level of spending that went on the Queensferry Crossing without borrowing, year on year to fund the A9 programme. That turned out not to be the case in part because of HMG capital spending decisions, then Covid and all associated with that which caused procurement for Tomatin to Moy to be abandoned due to one outrageously expensive bid, it is now being re-let.
Also Tory backed NIMBYS have caused a scheme that should already have been built to still be mired in the early stages of the required statutory processes in terms of the Pass of Birnam to (and including) the Tay Crossing. They are advocating for a tunnel that would consume 2/3rds of the total project budget!
Above all else, 3 sections of the A9 between Inverness and Perth have been dualled under the current SNP lead ScotGov, which is 3 more than would have been delivered by the unionist parties. Plus the existing section of dual carriageway North of Perth has been replaced with a grade separated junction replacing several at grade junctions with limited central reserve stacking space. Two of the schemes delivered would have been shorter 2+1 single carriageway schemes under the Labour / Lib Dem executive and one, plus the North of Perth dual carriageway replacement would not have happened at all.
It’s quite amazing to watch the Tories rage against the rate of progress on a project they’d have never allowed to get on the drawing board.

Patronise somebody that doesn’t live north of the Perth to Inverness stretch of the A9.

“which caused procurement for Tomatin to Moy to be abandoned due to one outrageously expensive bid, it is now being re-let.”
The contracting structure which places all the risk on the contractor means they quote with huge contingency. That’s why the costs were so high on top of the usual other stuff and ended up with only one bidder. The whole thing will be shelved until they can sort themselves out, government has choked it to death and never had any intention of sorting it out.

That is largely inaccurate. The dualling of the A9 in the Dunkeld/Pitlochry area is always going to be tricky. There is limited terrain to fit the road in and there are no good solutions. However this only applies for a short section of the road that needs to be dualed. The rest of the route about 70 miles is a simple proposition. However, they have not in over a decade gotten around to even issuing contracts for the build. If we were talking about a missed deadline because they were still trying to work out what to do with the Dunkeld/Pitlochry section I would be willing to give the SNP a pass. That is not the case however, the whole thing has been an unmitigated disaster from the SNP, who need to get on with governing. However, what can you expect from a party that believes tax dogging is a perfectly legitimate thing to do if you don't like the tax.
