Poster: A snowHead
|
I'm going to have to bin my beloved Head boots because the liners have packed out. It seems a colossal waste of plastic as the shell is fine. Also they've always fitted me so well that putting them on for the first holiday of the season is like having an old friend around for dinner! I contacted a company claiming to be the biggest stockist of Head spares, asking about new set of standard liners, but they did not reply. Does anyone know if stock liners are actually available? The only alternative I could find was aftermarket liner, but they were as much (or more) than new boots, so I bought new boots.

How old are the boots? How worn are the toe and heel pads?

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

The boots are 6 years old. Toe and heel pads are still good. Ironically, if they weren't, they are cheaply available.

I have a similar question for my Atomic boots. Bought last year but with a full season (22 weeks) of use I was at the limit of all the clasps on my shins by end of season. Suspect I won't get too much longer before they actually feel loose. Pretty sure new liners is all I need, but unclear if I will be able to source them.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I was at a presentation by Ski Bartlett back in November, very interesting.
They told me a couple of things about boots that I did not know...
1) The shells are only good for 10 years maximum. Using them or not.
2) The liners are only good for 180 days of use, then you'll need to replace them.
There is bound to be someone along in a minute who can tells us about after market liners such as Zipfits and the like.
I'd be interested to know more about these items myself as my liners are starting to settle quite a bit after just seasons and lots of time in the Hemelays Fridge.

Aftermarket liners are easy to source. Used to be some army surplus place on eBay selling Scarpa liners. Otherwise Intuition or Sidas or at a price the best option which is Zipfit which will likely outlast your next shells. Give Colin at S4F or Anything Techical a ring and see what they've got in spare stock liners too.

@Dave of the Marmottes, But at 3-400 quid they are the price of new boots. I managed to pick up a brand new set of the Technica Mach 1 MV Carbon Concept boots for £250, which for me rules out paying more money to put a new liner into my old shell. However if a stock liner can be purchased and the price is sane I'd definitely get one as I love my old boots!

What size are you looking for? I have a pair of 260/265 mondo Perfect Fit HD liners that I bought off eBay for my old Head Boots but never ended up using because I bought new boots.

Zipfit are a great investment if you can afford it, they will last most people thousands of ski days and definitely outlast any shell.
There is also the argument that you should start with a good fitting liner like a Zipfit and then fit the shell around it that best works for your foot/liner combination. The liner is the most critical part of the ski boot as it is the only part that can show compliance to the changes in your foot over the course of the day skiing.

@NoMapNoCompass, Are there no issues transfering a liner between different manufacturers' shells? I.e. two different make of 100mm last boots won't be exactly the same internally?
