We are excited to launch our new look, and our new name. Exemplifying our service of speed, ease and care, our name will change from Eurotunnel Le Shuttle to become LeShuttle, bringing modernity and personality to this unique service. |

Surely modernity would mean it'd be called "Le Shttl" or a name with some other combination of missing vowel typos?
Or are those kinds of brands "so last decade" now?

Maybe they think “Eurotunnel" has negative implications post leaving the EU?
Are they still in debt, maybe it relates to financial slight of hand?

It's interesting that on snowheads and amongst my friends everyone refers to it as "The Tunnel" or sometimes " The channel tunnel". No one ever uses the word "Shuttle " . Not even the English or french on their signposting.
So the company decided to name it after part of a loom! Rather than the one part of the name that people actually use.

Good to see the new "LeShuttle" (they've taken out the space to be 'down with the kids', @andy) up and running on their website. Thier EuroTunnel.ccom website... And while they've bought LeShuttle.com they just have it configured as a forward to EuroTunnel.com.
And @PowderAdict, far from the change being because it has fewer negative post-Brexit implications I think it might be the opposite. Let's face it Getlink, the French owners of the service have basically taken off the English half of the name so you just have the Fench, "Le" part left! It's almost as if UK->EU passenger numbers have recovered post-Covid because there's more reliable snow/sun on 'their' side while EU->UK numbers are still well down, so it's the EU audience they need to pay attention to.

I think it will end up like the London Underground being mostly known as "The Tube". Simply put, we either get a ferry or "the tunnel" if we are talking to anyone english speaking. I can't see that changing.

I'd rather they drop their prices instead of wasting money on an expensive rebrand.
They wanted £730 for Flexiplus next Easter, booking a year in advance. I bought some flights instead...

Generally people just say "tunnel" or "ferry" don't they. So yeah pointless IMO.

I suppose brands are "pointless" from a functional point of view anyway, but that's not what they're for. Lots of things have been rebranded and most people using the newer brands don't have a problem with it.

I would be far more interested if they were re-furbishing the rolling stock some of which is looking well past its 30+ years.
They announced a rolling refurbishment and bringing into use a moth-balled shuttle to cover the one being re-furbed but then covid arrived.
Bringing back Frequent Traveller tickets would be refreshing as well.

I don't think Flexiplus prices vary by advance booking date. Otherwise, since it's fully flex, you'd book for a year out at a cheap price, and move it to a train tomorrow (that trick lasted a couple of years with the old Easyjet Flexi fares!).
The flying equivalent - 4 business class flights - is similarly punchy.
The trick on both is to recoup the extra cost on free food and drink

"A Flexiplus ticket offers you a fully flexible and refundable fare. However, if you do need to travel on a Peak Day, a Peak Day Charge will be applicable. Charge starts from £10 up to £250* per leg – Busy days"
So even if you book for a cheaper day if you try to change it to a Peak Day they will make the Charge.

I don't get flexiplus. Why not just buy a normal ticket at a third of the price? If things go tits up then they've gone tits up and problems have be solved any way. I must have saved thousands over the years.

We always refer to it as The Chunnel, amalgamating Channel Tunnel. Occasionally we'll just say 'the train'. Never LeShuttle.

I've normally just had it "free" as part of a package, or I've paid the extra as I was the only driver and wanted to make the journey as easy as possible.
And a refundable standard ticket for next Easter is £330, which in my view is also way too much money. Easter this year was very quiet on the Eurotunnel (sorry LeShuttle!)

Yeah, I don't get it either but I am happy that people do as it must keep the standard ticket prices down.

I've never paid flexiplus, or anything approaching £330 return, but then I've not had to travel at peak times. Have sometimes had to wait, but in terms of "payment for hour" compared to using Flexiplus it was better money than I'd ever earned in my life. I agree that leshuttle is a stupid name. The only "Shuttle" I ever heard referred to as such was the old BA Glasgow/London flights when you were guaranteed a place on the next departure. To achieve that they sometimes offered quite good money to people willing to sit and wait a bit - an offer I often accepted.

Seems a bit odd that they haven't set up a Le Shuttle website (even if only as a placeholder). If everyone still has to book via www.eurotunnel.com they may have difficulty in getting the new name to stick.

Tunnel prices are now stupid if travelling with three dogs, they now charge €27 for each dog, up from €16 or so only a couple of years ago.
Yesterday we went with P&O using their pet lounge and that was really good - the cost was €186 vs €270 for the tunnel.
We arrived and were told we'd have a wait for the ferry, however after going through all the checks, and you can understand the propensity for big queues and wait-times in busy periods, as the checks now are far more intense, and that was going from Calais to Dover, we were then ushered on to a waiting ferry which left ten mins later, a result!

I didn't realise until this year that the price you pay also depends on the size of your car - bigger means more expensive (and I'm not talking roofbox/bikes etc - just general sizing).
|
|
|
|
|
|
@kettonskimum, is that correct? How did you find out, price with different vehicles?
I'm sure I tried with or without roofbox and it didn't make any odds. However, I could be wrong/dreamt it or it has changed...

Yes, I didn't think that "ordinary" cars were priced on size. So many are so massive that if that's the case a lot of people must be paying extra.

Way back when I was a student I worked in the SeaLink Call centre doing ferry bookings.
The booking system was hosted on the British Rail Maniframe in Nottingham, and for freight these was normally 360 linear metres allocated, which at the time was 30 x 12m RO/RO units. Coaches also were just allocated a 12m slot, but cars fell into one of these 3 categories
under 4m
4m - 4.5m
over 4.5m
and each had different prices. ( Apart from 3/5 day mini-breaks where it was a flat price for a car and 4 pax). When making a booking we had to put in the exact length of the vehicle so that the loaders could optimise the car decks ( they also had the high garage / low garage to factor in). Each call centre agent had a thick book which had every make and model of car going back about 30 years, and we had to look it up. Though after a while you did get to learn the lengths of the popular vehicles at the time (205, Escort, Golf, Sierra etc) which made the job much quicker if the punter had a common car

At the moment they've done the obvious thing - registered the "LeShuttle.com" domain and configured it to 301 (though that might come back to bite them) redirect to "eurotunnel.com". As a result anyone using the new domain gets sent to the 'old' site with the new branding/brand announcement. They could have gone the other way, redirecting "eurotunnel.com" to "leshuttle.com" but that will (quite correctly) spook a lot of people - they know who the "eurotunnel.com" site is but will have never heard of "leshuttle.com" so it looks like a domain hijack fraud.
Down the line I'd expect them to swap things, so "LeShuttle.com" becomes the main and "eurotunnel.com" redirect there - at which point the choice of a 301 will have a number of people in endless redirection looks (301 is meant to be "permamently moved to new location" and as such browsers are meant to save that info and automatically redirect without making a fresh request to the 301ed URL. Add a 301 on that target that redirects back to the first and you have "leshuttel.com" -> "eurotunnel.com" -> "leshuttle.com" -> "eurotunnel.com" -> ...)
Or nobody pays any attention to the rebrand and 90% of their traffic still comes in via "eurotunnel.com" and the whole thing is quietly forgotten about. I mean who ever said "Consignia" rather than "Royal Mail", or had a clue whoe "Monday:" were/what they did vs PWC...?

Carphone Warehouse didn't bother changing their name when people stopped buying carphones, or even when they were bought by Currys and lost their warehouses. I think the Channel Tunnel can stay as it is.

Just got an email from Peak Retreats about changes To flexiplus
Eurotunnel has changed its FlexiPlus offering for the upcoming season. Rather than being flexible across different days, you now need to travel on the day you've booked to travel.
That’s a bit rubbish if you pay the extra, pretty inflexible if you ask me.

|

|

Although.....if that helps with their daily planning it might disable the disruptions that seem to occur at peak travel times?
