Poster: A snowHead

Greetings Snowheads! My first posting so please be gentle if I break any rules. Am staying in St Gervais, in the middle of a four-day trip. I feel I have skied everything I want to in St Gervais and Megeve, and am thinking of going up to
Chamonix tomorrow.
Trouble is, no car, and can't find any details of public transport, and the taxis seem really expensive.
So, can anybody tell me: is it feasible to go from St Gervais in the morning for a day skiing in Chamonix, and back the same day without spending a fortune or wasting precious hours? And if so, how? (And I am staying in St Gervais up-the-hill as I think it should be called. not St Gervais La Fayet where my bus dropped me. another story...)
The snow, by the way, is better than I expected higher up, and it is snowing tonight all night, but raining in town. The slopes are empty too!
Ok, so many many thanks I advance for your advice. Chris

Isn't there a direct train service between St Gervais and Chamonix?

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Isn't there a chairlift from St Gervais to Les Houches? Could ski Les Houches and then hop on one of the three buses to to the Cham valley mountains.

@Zero_G, no chair, but there is a train!
Best bet would be the train from lower St Gervais, for skiing get off at Le Praz for Flegere, or Argentiere for Grand Montets, or even Valorcine for Le Tour.
I've done Chamonix to Les Contamines for a days skiing by public transport but certainly wouldn't recommend it.
@cjhack, given current conditions check the lift openings before traveling, I suspect much will be closed tomorrow.

Hi
Its really easy to get to Les Houches from St Gervais, use the Mountain Railway - the station is at the bottom end of town - just below the square with the carousel. Gives you access to the whole of Les Houche area which will keep you busy for the day. If there is low cloud, Les Houches is better option to Les Contamines which is featureless in flat light conditions (no trees)

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Looks like you can get a combined train ticket / lift pass now ..
http://www.compagniedumontblanc.co.uk/en/site-overview/tramway-du-mont-blanc/rates
Used to be that the Evasion pass covered Les Houches and included the train but then that was stopped .. last time I asked at the SG station the train ticket and lift pass were completely seperate and it was going to cost stupid money to use the train to ski Les Houches so we didn't .. maybe this year.

I could have had an unpleasant surprise a couple of days ago when we were at Les Houches and I said, "hey, our passes cover SG, let's ski over there and ski back for a change of scenery."

haha it needs a LOT more snow before you'll be able to do that route, you pop out in park thermal, but as you're going though heavily wooded area's its rarely doable...

How can you do this? There’s no no piste. I can’t even see how you do this off piste.
