Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Positive news - San Bernardino (CH) re-opens

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Some positive news.

The skiing area in San Bernardino (CH) was closed since 2012 because of a conflict between owner and local authorities.

Ownership changed, and they are working to re-open the area.
Ambitious plans to replace the aging lifts with modern ones, and even an extension into a whole new mountain, to the north (right) of the current area.

No official opening date yet. But work on reviving existing lifts (electronics, painting) is progressing really fast. And there's lot of rumours they will open this season, December 8th. Nothing officially confirmed though.

Latest news here. It's in German, if you can't read German, you can put the URL into google translate.

And a new picture of the slopes.
The new mountain area that is planned for future extension, is "Alp de Murcia" on the right.

Rare to have a ski resort in the Alps reopening after such a long time (or a new one opening) nowadays. With climate change, environmental pressures etc., I wonder if something like this will ever happen again?

Super Saint Bernard (near Martigny) was closed years ago. Due to vandalism, will never open again.
Espace San Bernardo (La Thuile IT + La Rosiere FR). Open and healthy.
San Bernardino. This topic. Ticino, was closed, now re-opens and re-animated.

And... they opened with splendid weather, blue skies all over, and very good snowcover.

Good news for the UK skiers as well, a new resort, high and snow sure, only 2 hours from Milan.

 You know it makes sense.
You know it makes sense.
It is actually in an Italian speaking part of Graubünden not Ticino. It is a fair drive from any large population centre (Milan is about 2.5 hours assuming no big queues at Como) though given it is pretty high it should have good snow conditions so popular with locals. I drove over the actual pass (rather than the tunnel) on the way back from Milan a few months ago (I prefer it to the Brenner, less time on the Autostrada!). The pass itself is a steep & twisty climb above the village and pretty remote not many will go that way these days.

There is a real contrast between the somewhat austere, bleak and isolated German speaking valley on the northern side and the sunny Italian one on the southern side. It bought to mind the poem by Goethe "Know'st thou the land where the lemon-trees bloom" which is about the mythical longing of many German speakers for the sunny and warm land to the south of the mountains.
