I'm looking at getting some shell trousers / getting rid of sweaty insulated trousers & came across these
https://www.sportpursuit.com/catalog/product/view/id/4010586
Has anyone tried this brand?
My current ski trousers are far too warm, I've never worn any lower base layers but insulated trousers get sweaty & clammy after a few days so going to a shell with a changeable base layer is long overdue.
My spec list is,
Mid/light colour, black/dark gets far too hot in the sun.
Leg vents, bigger the better, I'm rather sceptical of "breathable" fabrics, they don't breath anywhere near enough to dump the heat when needed, ok for a gentle walk, but openable vents are essential for me.
Suitable for offpiste.
£150 max price, happy to go with last year's model at x% off (never pay list) yes, I'm a scruffy cheapskate, but I can ski well enough to get away with it

@tangowaggon, I have a pair of the Untrakt Obsidian trousers and really like them. I've done about 50-60 days skiing in them, over 4 years or so, and they've lasted well. I wear them with 3/4 length running tights for most conditions and add a pair of Decathlon thermal shorts (sold for cross-country skiing) if it's properly cold. Pockets are big, bibs work well for me and are removable if you prefer. All in all, I think they're great value for money.

@tangowaggon, Lycra? It’s breathable and cheap no need for leg vents, the wind blows straight through

On second thoughts maybe look in the alpine section in a big decathlon for ideas on soft shell.

@tangowaggon, I treated myself to a pair of pants from SportsPursuit last year.
It does seem a great place to buy gear. You may have to wait a couple of weeks for it to turn up. But you can spot your bargains.
The big problem is that you can't try it on for size.
I don't know if I've got a particularly odd shape, but ski pants on me are usually 4+ inches too long.
I've had the pants altered by a very skilled seamstress, she managed to shorten the pants without changing anything on the ankles.
I chose a pair of Elevenate, I like them, shame about the colour though... Khaki

I bought a pair when my Scott started showing their age. I've not used them a lot but they've been good. Held up perfectly at last year's PiPAU when it relentlessly persisted all day on Monday. I wear Untrakt 3/4 leggings under them. They're a merino/bamboo mix and excellent.

The ones you are looking out, have a relatively low performance specification. You should remember that sport pursuit specialise in selling bankrupt and aged stock. They are similar to TK Maxx where you can find absolutely marvellous bargains but also a load of crap.
I’m a huge advocate of sport pursuit, but only for those who research what they’re buying.
These look like better quality but again you should research them outside sportpursuit

Yes, another pair, but they described the breatheability as “yes”.
Do your research on everything they advertise and don’t rely on their descriptions and you will get some really good bargains in the process |

I have three pairs of marmot goretex trousers from sports pursuit (having forgotten to return two pairs to try on during lockdown - but now I figure I’m set for life). They are always around and roughly in your price range, though somewhat ‘interesting’ colour schemes - I’ve found the first pair I’m wearing (spire, I think) are holding up well after about eight weeks, and I often end up skiing in the rain, and I give up before they do. I run hot as well, and simple to layer up for the colder days.

Buy the matching jacket too and you'll have a 'shell suit'.

I had the same overheating problem that @tangowaggon, had. I went for a pair of Dynafit Beast hybrid pants which if memory serves were about £120, braces are extra although I use an old pair that I had with my older Spyder pants. They were brilliant last season, Problem solved. I got them from Sport pursuit although I'm not sure if they are still offering them, but at the time (off season) they were available from lots of places. I used sport pursuit because I also wanted to try ortovox, but the Dynafit fit was better for me.
My daughter is now using Marmot lightray shell trousers which she lovers as they are cooler particularly towards the end of the season. Again from sport pursuit.

Stick to quality brands and buy at the right price. It's pretty simple.
Being mugged over by Mike Ashley demonstrates laziness regarding what you're actually spending your money on. Another chalet for MA in Verbier.

@Hoss0610, I've got the alpinism ones, like you say they work well. I think they're a bit thinner this year than the old versions. I get a bit sweaty skinning up, but generally only at "drop Ronald" pace . Downhill is no issue.
@tangowaggon, one or two layers of merino on underneath and its all good. Maybe pull on a hardshell overtrouser if its raining, but thats rarely necessary and normally warm. I think I had an old version of the decathlon ones on for spring off piste (too many years ago), they're still going strong.
I havent destroyed any zips yet, and nothing survives crampon front points or sharpened ski edges so no point even trying there. Plus, it all doubles up for hiking and mountaineering.

@tangowaggon, I've found getting decent kit to be good value for money long term, for example I have a pair of leather Hestra gloves which may make your toes curl at the initial outlay. However, spread that over the 10 plus years that they have served and they seem like a good deal.
My last jacket and pants were Salomon, 1 tier down from the top stuff and bought on sale, they served for 4 seasons with only slight signs of wear, all seals and seems in good order with 1 dodgy zip on a chest pocket. This was bought at discount prior to Brexit from a European supplier.
I've replaced it this year with a new set, partly because of the zip but mostly because the hood on the jacket was too small to work well when wearing a helmet. I sold the old stuff on, recouping some of the outlay, not too likely with Nevica etc stuff, the retained value reduces the initial expense / goes toward replacement cost.
My current set came from here https://www.snowleader.co.uk/en/ at a good discount. They also have discount codes that seem to change every week or two so if you can time it you might be able to pick up some top quality stuff at a great price. All import and taxes taken care of at their end, the price you see is the price you pay. I ordered a couple of different sizes as I sat between the measurements, returns were hassle free.
Just my 2 pennies worth.

@tangowaggon, I've got the Obsidian (not sure what difference there is for the Pro vesion as they look basically the same), had them since early 2023 so used them for about 5 weeks skiing. I really like them and they seem to be decent quality, I'd put them on par with the Arcyteryx that I had before. Not sure I've even bothered with a base layer but have definitely got to the level sometimes where I'd have liked one. I also like the removable bib
