Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Tecnica Zero G: Scout v. Pro Version

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi,

I will most likely grab a pair of either of these. Fit is really good with my existing and tried & true Intuitions.

I can get the Scouts locally, tried these and they feel good, flex a bit stiffer than my old boots (Last Gen. Carbon Cuff Zzero4s) ((Yes, about time to retire them))

How would you guys gauge the stiffness difference between the Scout and Pro Version?
Any other difference other than cuff material and flex?

for reference, I found Scarpa Quattro too stiff in both XT and SL variants, too much of a brick wall feeling and pinching shins. I ski a lot (40-50 days/season), but in a controlled fashion on and off piste and weigh around 80kgs at 187cms. Biggest Ski to drive is a Kastle TX103.

Thanks for your input!

@danbre2022, I have done about 150 days in the Scouts.

Didn't try the Pro as my trusted fitter pointed out that as I am not a Clydesdale or a balls out freeride type, the Pro would probably be unnecessarily stiff for me.

For context I am 12st 5lbs. Skis Salomon MTN Explore 95, Black Crows Atris and now Black Diamond Helio Carbon 104. I have never felt a lack of stiffness. Is it were...

@danbre2022, I think the Scouts are nominally a 120, Pros 130. I reckon the Pros (even with stock liner) were stiffer than my old Salomon race 130s. But pleasant and progressive.

Even at your mass, Scouts maybe enough?

I’ve got the pros with Sidas liners. Wouldn’t call them stiff - nothing like Alpine 130 boots. They ski and tour really nicely with freeride touring skis

@BobinCH, Mine definitely felt stiffer than my Salomons. Mind you, the Salomons were quite old (I'm thinking 8-9 seasons? => 500 days) ... i.e. had screws in places there shouldn't be screws to hold them together Twisted Evil

Even if stiffness was very similar, they would still label it down on the Scouts to justify the price gap, i guess?

For me free touring boots (however much I beef them up - my 1.3kg Zero-G pros are closer to 1.7 kg’s with Sidas liners, footbeds, ankle and shin shims, booster straps etc) are all sloppy vs alpine and I’d always go as stiff as possible knowing they can’t match Alpine suspension. But based on your experience with Scarpa maybe the Scout is a better option for you?

My zero g tour pros are wonderfully comfortable on both up and down and I love them dearly but still no match for Alpine boots in properly demanding conditions.

FWIW, I have skied the Scouts since they first came out. I junked the liners a couple of years ago and replaced them with some Intuition’s. I have found them plenty stiff enough for me, but I haven’t skied a pure alpine boot for many years so can’t compare them directly. I think a lot comes down to your height, weight, your aggression and your technique. I imagine only you will know that. If it helps I am 175cm and 63kg.

Thanks for the opinions! Well, seems that no one found Scout too soft, neither are there reports of Pro's being too stiff. Given my history of not liking every single stiff ski my anecdotal shin bang issues in stiff boots, I spread the risk and bought some last year's Scout used for sub 200€. I will have to dial in lean, footbed, liner, binding shims anyway. if all that works out out, I can always get a Pro no problem and move the stuff over.
