Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

100km piste resort in Austria

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Three old boys looking to go to Austria late January. Ideal requirements would be:

Roughly 100km of runs
Walk to lifts or easy bus
Several good mountain restaurants
Couple of bars in town for lively apres.

Over the last few years, we've been to Skiwelt (Ellmau and Soll), Kitzbuhel, Corvara (Dolomites), Mayrhofen and Saalbach / Hinterglemm.

We're looking to downsize the resort for cheaper accommodation, lift pass and ski hire prices.

Where would you recommend which would be less glitzy than the above resorts but would have enough interesting skiing for 3 competent intermediates?

Thanks

Ooh - nice selection, I'll have a look. Trying to get 5 nights including skiing for £1000 per head, separate rooms. It's a challenge.

@TopGooner, you've done Mayrhofen, but you could stay in Kaltenbach or Zell am Ziller. Kaltenbach (Hochfügen) claim 93km of piste, and Zell am Ziller claim 150km. You'll find them both cheaper than Mayrhofen also.

Thanks for the suggestions. Not sure there'd be enough bars / restaurants for the evenings unless things have changed. They seemed pretty quiet when we went through there previously

@TopGooner, we stayed at the Pension Schachner in Schladming. It wasn't fancy but was decent enough.

Obertauern would be a good option but accommodation can be pricey.

Solden. Rather boring but Obergurgl is on the same skipass and free bus. Nederhutte was fun.
Or Kirchberg and repeat Kitz & Westendorf/Brixen

Kaltenbach has pretty lively apres-ski at the Postalm at the bottom of the slopes.

As an alternative area suggestion have a look at the Salzburger Sportwelt part of Ski Amadé area. Fellow snowHead @flangesax runs a guesthouse Haus Susanne in Radstadt that has 5 double rooms, so if they have vacancies for your dates then you could all have separate rooms. In addition to the standard B&B he normally also offers a half board option (the food is very good). https://austrian-adventures.com/index.html#booknow

We've had a couple of great apres sessions in the Postalm.
Haven't a clue how we managed to get the train back to Mayrhofen afterwards.

St Johann in Tirol. Nice town, plenty of restaurants and bars and decent lively umbrella bar at the foot of the run home. Only 50km on the local ski pass but there are another four or so linked areas easily accessed by bus which add another 100km.

Not yet but the others have asked if I can shave about £300 off the total cost each…. I’m holding it as it may still be the best option as it’s half board.

Is a car necessary to get around the Amadé area? Looks very spread out. More so than the Sella Ronda for example?

@TopGooner, Schladming above is a good shout, only been the once but liked it and it seemed good value.

Alpbach and the Skijuwel area are also pretty decent, not mega lively but has a few good bars https://www.skijuwel.com/en/winter

The FIS Races are in Schladming during the days we're planning so that rules there out and also probably Salzburg airport (?), so I'm thinking it would be better flying into Innsbruck

we're looking at 20 - 25 January and the Schladming races are 23/24th

@TopGooner, The Salzburg airport will be normal...
The race events are amazing (especially the night race!) it only impacts the 2 runs to the valley. There are load of other options in and around Schladming / Amadé to swallow up the loss of that area if you are wanting to avoid it.
Areas are commutable by ski bus etc... a car makes things easier but if you are based centrally within one of the separate 'colours/areas' on the big ski map then you can get around that area very easily... if not just by sliding then by one or 2 busses.

Ski Amadé is a great place to explore.

@TopGooner, if you do a DIY trip don’t rule out Munich for flights. We’ve done this for Skiwelt and St Johann in Tirol rather than using an Austrian airport and it worked out way cheaper.
