I didn’t think that Lowther Hills were operating anymore at all. Happy to be proven wrong.

The Lowther Hill tow almost certainly won’t be used this winter, it needs a new rope and realistically a new engine shed if it is going to be used again to stop everything getting too damp / corroded to start.
Some of the stuff from the hill is now at Glencoe, including various novice park features and the small piste basher! It might be seen out and about grooming the haul road down to the carpark!
The portable rope tows have been serviced and are still there so skiing on the golf course might still be possible.

Given the absolutely unpredictable nature of Scottish snow cover (especially at lower altitudes), it's incredible that the policy of years gone by of making hay when the sun shines, has been completely jettisoned in favour of an Alps-style determined opening date.
What's the betting that there's not enough snow to run the lower lifts (for upper mountain access) on 22nd December? I do hope there is though...

There’s more snow in gullies below the Top Basin - as well as being exposed to the highest winds the top has been persistently in low cloud, it’s by no means continuous but the burn gullies such as the Gunbarrel and Ciste Gully retain something of a base. That in itself is the hardest work done in starting things off on CairnGorm.
However given the uncertainty over the coming week, it remains to be seen if things build out from what is there or cover retreats further. This is all pretty normal for time of year, historically CairnGorm often offers turns in Nov or early Dec then loses it pre Christmas. Between Boxing Day and New Year is often the start of more consistent lift served riding, indeed historically mid Jan is the average start at Glencoe.

We should see a bit coming through in the next 10 days and hopefully stick around. I'm back working from Jan snow permitting so will see what we get after new year.

Distinct cold / warm air boundary from SW to NE. I also read that there was a period where it was raining at the top of the Cairnwell Pass while snowing at the bottom in Braemar.

I’d say the Lecht is probably the best place just now. It tends to be less wild and takes less snow to get going.

@mountainaddict, It always intrigued me that someone from the USA would start the Scottish snow report thread every year.

Glenshee in quite a good position now - some slopes open already and a promising forecast, including cool and settled weather in the long term forecast which is good for income if there's snow already on the ground. Plus they haven't completely missed the school holiday period.
Happy for them as they're a properly skier-orientated centre but often struggle for natural snow.
