Hi Everybody.
Any thoughts on Zillertal early Jan for a 5 night, 6 day trip - 2nd Jan - 7th. I'm restricted by New Years Day and therefore Munich is the likely airport. I cant get into Salzburg or Innsbruck, not can I get into any of the Dolly airports like Marco Polo or Verona as this would be my preference.
I'll probably go for ZAZ or Hof for my hotel. As always the snow is never guaranteed but how does the Zillertal usually do that early?

@Gaz_H, the beginning of January is not that early, in all probability there will be reasonable snow cover. It is still high season, in much (all?) of Germany the 6th of January is a public holiday and the "back to work day" for many & schools will be Monday 8th next year. Access from Munich airport is pretty straight forward either get the S bahn to Hauptbahnhof for direct connections to Jenbach or get a hire car, about a 2.5 hour drive. If you stay on the train past Jenbach it ends up travelling through the Südtirol, not sure where it stops, I think Franzensfeste & Bözen, you can get to many of the Dolomite resorts from either place.

@Gaz_H, I suspect you'll struggle to find a hotel for 5 nights 2nd - 7th Jan. 6th Jan. is a public holiday, so a lot of people stay from New Year until the 6th.
The snow is usually OK at that time and of course, Hintertux is at the end of the valley if the snow is thin lower down.

Thanks for the tip on the 6th being a holiday. I realise that it's the NY holidays that week but it's something I'll have to suck up. Unless of course there is a quieter location I can get too. I'll be getting a hire car btw

@Gaz_H, superski card would give you access to Zillertal Arena (Zell am Ziller) then some other areas within striking distance, if you fancied driving around. Alpbach next door for example, the Skiwelt, Kitzbuhel.

Which resort are you thinking of? There are lots of large resorts in the Zillertal valley with separate large ski areas spread along 40km of road from Hintertux to Mayrhofen to Zel am Ziller to Kaltenbach/Hochzillertal (plus some small ones). And what sort of skiing are you looking for?

If you're happy to do a compulsory black run (I don't recall it being too black tbh), then Zell am Ziller is linked with Gerlos and Königsleiten, making it one of the larger areas in the valley.

@andy, my mistake, I had skied all except Zell am Ziller and didn't realise till I just looked at the map how far East it was possible to travel. It was the only one our guide didn't take us in his van. (We were based in the middle at Mayerhofen and it was quite a long drive to the two extremes). Yes, if you are prepared to do that it is as big as the others.
(I had been taking out the comment of Zell being smaller than the other areas, after looking at the map, and then found your comment waiting for me.)

The run east from Zell am Ziller is rather unusual - long and in the middle of nowhere (and a long slow chair back which turns a right angle)- takes you to a whole new area

@buchanan101, I maybe wrong and it wouldn't be the 1st time. Something in my mind is telling me they're building a new lift to miss out the rightangle up and over. Pretty sure I saw some concrete structure resembling a lift station under construction(stopped for the winter) this last season

I think the piste map is already showing a new lift - a 10 person bubble

That's good - because it is a great area out the back, and that long run if early in the day (so not mogulled up) is a blast

@buchanan101, coldest I've ever been skiing was sat on that old chair coming back towards Zell am Ziller on our holiday in January!

That black, definitely a proper black, but not extreme. However it can become a significant challenge when mogulled. But, you can download on the chair - seen plenty do it, but not done personally.
Oh and beware the Zell am Ziller home run, steep, narrow black. Low altitude so soft and slushy in warm weather, but frequently very icy, with fresh snow quickly scraped off. But the gondolas are fast and most download!

Yep, I'd love to see some of the "not so black" brigade on 10 on a late sunny afternoon.
Or first thing on a bitingly cold morning

OK, I'm confused, what is the compulsory black to get from ZaZ to Gerlos? I've skied over often enough and only remember red and blues? Or is it 10 back to Zell which would have to be skied whether you go to Gerlos or not (assuming no downloading)

Technically a compulsory black to reach Konigsleitten I don't remember it being particularly difficult tho. Not skied over since Pandemic, so may be misremembering.

Done it.... ZamZ booked 2..7th Jan. Managed to get a hotel right in the middle of the village; Lieblingsplatz Tirolerhof. Ended up on a BNB basis rather than HB hut Austria is reasonable and only for 5 evenings.
Really looking forward to it now as the Zillertal has been on the list for a while

@Gaz_H, some years ago I stayed in Zell am Ziller on a B&B basis, there's plenty of places to eat in an evening. There's also a residential tourism school based in ZamZ on the Bahnhofstrasse that teaches young people who want to learn the hotel and hospitality business. They run two restaurants in the same building complex, one is an Italian style pizza and pasta restaurant called Ristorante Quattro, and the other is called the Restaurant Zellerhof which does regional and international dishes and is located on the first floor above the Ristorante Quattro. As the kitchen staff and waiters are supervised by instructors the quality of the food is very good, and because they only have to cover their operating costs the prices are pretty reasonable too.

@swskier, I'm not sure if the Restaurant Zellerhof is open in Summer, it may only be open in Winter, you'd need to check. I think the Ristorante Quattro is open both Summer and Winter.
