Hi everyone, I have seen 2 deals, one on Heidi and the other on Sunweb. One for Davos and the other is Griindelwald. Which would you recommend for.
Early Jan
6 days 5nights
5 of us and no beginners... need quite a large area.... scenic would be good
Budget constrained.... though will go for some beer for apres
Half board, so no eating out apart from lunch
Fly to Zurich
Thanks as always

You mention scenic, Grindelwald steals it in that department. The view up to the Eiger is impressive.
Davos is spread out with several areas satellites to the main area.
A trip to Murren from Grindelwald is involved and too much for many people. In my view it's part of the area and enjoy the scenery.
Which one you choose, will make little difference to you all having a great week

I've been to the Davos/Klosters area at least a dozen times and to Wengen maybe 6 or so. Love them both.
I agree with @Rogerdodger, that the view of the Eiger is one of the most scenic in the Alps, but there is also a lot of very scenic territory in Davos/Klosters. I doubt that there is much to choose between them as far as costs are concerned. Davos is a very easy train ride from Zurich, Grindelwald requires some changes. Maybe you have coach transfers with an OP.
I would say that the skiing in Davos/Klosters is better and more extensive.
You have the main mountain (Parsenn) which is big enough itself to qualify as a small-medium sized resort but then there is also Jakobshorn which is good for a couple of days skiing and slightly further down the valley (c. 20 minutes on the bus) is Rhinerhorn which is good for a day. There is also Madrissa in Klosters, but that is probably not necessary for just a week's stay.
Davos is a large town and not pretty in itself but the mountains make up for that.
If snow conditions allow, then you can ski all the way down the valley to Kublis and get the train back, which is one of the longer runs in the Alps - best done at the end of the day.

I don’t know as haven’t been there at the time, but guess it would be worth avoiding the World Economic Forum annual Davos jamboree (usually mid Jan). There surely must be disruption to skiers from all those global leaders and their security etc. 2023 WEF dates were 16-20 Jan

@Inboard, its the best time to ski ‘if’ you can get a room. No one on the slopes.

You'll need to Register first of course.

@Inboard, OP said "early Jan" so shouldn't be a clash. But worth noting that traffic to and from resort can be slow in the week before due to security checks.

Thanks... I'll be there 2nd to 7th Jan. Jungfrau region has always been on the cards but this deal in Davos (which I always assumed was big bucks) has thrown a spanner in....

@Gaz_H, Where in Davos is the place located?

I'd have thought early season Davos has a slightly better snow record and would be the one I would go for if booking in advance.
If the snows good both places are great to ski.
PS scenery in Davos is good though the town itself isn't particularly attractive.

Worth pointing out that you will in all probability only be looking at 4 days skiing max due to transfers. Wengen is small but scenic and plenty of skiing for 4 days. Davos is a city. Not my idea of a skiing holiday destination. Klosters next door would be better. ( help I’m agreeing with Whitegold!)

Not sure about "many people", it just needs a little bit of planning and getting up early enough for the 0830 train. Used to be a regular feature of Ski Club of Great Britain holidays when I lead a couple of trips there.
Of the two choices I'd also suggest that Grindelwald would be the better option. Davos is too big, both in the town and the ski area, such that youd barely have found your way around in a few days. whereas Grindelwald offers several easy (to plan and execute) options for a range of ability levels,

I agree with you @Chaletbeauroc, the trip is easy. I am based in Lauterbrunnen and I ski First very regularly. However my experience over many, many seasons is one of disgruntled folk getting "lost" at Zweilutschinen.
Protestations of "never effing doing this again"!!!!

That's a pretty central location, so easy to wander out to shops, bars etc in the evening. However, not really walking distance to any of the lifts so you would need to get the (very frequent) public bus at start and end of day. Not really a problem, in my view, and the journey time is short - maybe 5 minutes.

I don't really buy this argument. Davos is bigger but it doesn't mean you have to ski every last km of it. And it's not complicated.
Just go up Parsenn on the first day and explore the half dozen or so ways down to about half way on the mountain (some Davos side, some Klosters side). Then expand a bit.
The run all the way down to Davos is great until mid afternoon when it gets a bit busy. In good snow conditions there is a fantastic black down to Wolfgang for lunch ad hop on the bus back to Davos after. Skiing down to Serneus or Kublis at the end of the day and getting the train back is also quite special. Then there's Jacobshorn with loads of skiing itself.
